Throughout a professional dance career that spanned more than twenty years, Summer Lee Rhatigan took advantage of every opportunity to develop and refine her teaching skills. She has taught virtually every level of student in settings as diverse as dance schools, universities, and professional dance companies.

During her dance career, Summer was a soloist and principal dancer with London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet), Oakland Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, LINES Ballet, and the San Francisco Opera Ballet, as well as a guest artist with other dance companies internationally. She received her early training at the Elmhurst Ballet School in Surrey, England, and then the Royal Ballet School in London, and was the youngest winner at the time to receive the prestigious Adeline Genée Gold Medal.

While she was dancing, Summer had the privilege of working with many choreographers of distinction on the creation of new and existing works. Among these were Rudolf Nureyev, Agnes de Mille, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Léonide Massine, Sir Frederick Ashton, Robert North, Nicholas (Papa) Beriosov, Ruthanna Boris, John Butler, Mary Skeaping, Anna Sokolow, Ben Stevenson, Glen Tetley, Anthony Tudor, Tandy Beal, Ronald Hynd, Bronislava Nijinska, Michael Clark, John Hart, Matthew Hawkins, Barry Moreland, Dame Marie Rambert, Beryl Grey, John Field, Eugene Loring, Michael Corder and David Allan, as well as Bay Area choreographers Alonzo King, Michael Smuin, Ronn Guidi, Val Caniparoli, Carlos Carvajal, Betsy Erickson, Julia Adam, Lawrence Pech, Robert Moses, John Pasqualetti, Ron Thiele, Kirk Peterson, Tomi Paasonen, Alex Ketley, Christian Burns, Arturo Fernandez and Stephen Pelton. Her classical repertoire included principal roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, Coppelia, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, La Sylphide, Les Sylphides, The Sleeping Beauty, The Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

*Master classes will be based upon a first come, first served basis. Classes will not exceed a maximum of 40 participants. Arrive early to ensure your place in class!

Join us for a FREE professional development workshop with dance artist Elizabeth Johnson. Build tools in community engagement and learn more about this one of a kind internship. Application for the internship is not required to attend the workshop. However, future volunteer opportunities tied to this project will be available and supported by this workshop session. Attendance is HIGHLY recommended for application for the internship.

ELIZABETH JOHNSON is a choreographer, dancer, and educator with a particular focus on young artists through embodied learning and leadership development in the arts. She works to connect communities through dance and dialogue. She is a yoga practitioner, runner and rock climber. She was graduated from Connecticut College with a B.A. in Dance and a minor in Theatre, has studied at London Contemporary Dance School, and was the Associate Artistic Director of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange.

Description: DANCE WITH NORA

Come dance with Nora Chipaumire, New York-based contemporary dancer and choreographer, in a free workshop open to the public sponsored by Arizona State University Herberger Institute School of Dance on Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 1:00-4:30pm in the Nelson Fine Arts Center, studio 122, ASU Tempe Campus.

The workshop can accommodate many levels of dance experience and offers an introduction to Nora’s artistic philosophy as well as her movement and creative practices. No registration is necessary.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Nora’s background includes training extensively with Germaine Acogny, considered the mother of contemporary African dance at L’Ecoles des Sables in Senegal. Since 2005, Nora has toured extensively around the world as an independent artist and won numerous awards for her choreography. She also has played an instrumental role as Associate Artistic Director for the internationally renowned company, Urban Bush Women. Nora is a regular artist faculty at the Herberger Institute School of Dance and will be in residence during the fall 2011 semester.
