CONTRA-TIEMPO is a Los Angeles based dance company, founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez. The company fuses Salsa, Afro-Cuban, Hip-Hop, and abstract dance theater.

Technique Class in the company’s choreographic work – We use a unique blend of Salsa, Afro-Cuban and other dances of the African Diaspora, fused with urban street forms and contemporary concert technique and dance fundamentals. This master class will use this unique style of fusing forms to move dancers through an exploration of their bodies as creative, conscious and connected movers. We will begin with a warm up in the center, moving in and out of the floor. Undulations, body rolls, footwork patterns and hip isolations will all be a part of this center floor work. We will then work on traveling and taking this new found way of moving through the space, devouring the space, owning the ‘stage’, having your ‘voice’ be heard as a dancer. We will end the class, by teaching a small section of a new piece of company repertoire.

Ana Maria Alvarez (Artistic Director- CONTRA-TIEMPO, Choreographer and Dancer) Alvarez received her MFA in Choreography from UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures, where she currently teaches.
