Canyon Movement Company JOINS GLOBAL CAMPAIGN – ONE BILLION RISING – TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

On February 22, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., Canyon Movement Company will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, a month of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.

As part of Canyon Movement Company’s 20th anniversary celebration in 2013, they will present an evening of dance performance and dance films honoring women. Specific dances and film about the movement to end violence against women will be shown, as well as other perspectives on women. There will also be a “Community Dance” performed during the show. If you want to learn the Flash Mob Dance and participate, come early at 6:30 pm to learn it and perform it during the show. New choreography by director Gina Darlington will be shown, as well as new films by Amanda Kapp.

This event will be held at the Canyon Dance Academy Studio Theater at 2812 N. Izabel Street, across from Coconino High School. There is limited chair seating, so bring a cushion to sit on.

Donations at the door will be donated to local organizations that support the cause to end violence against women such as Bothands in Flagstaff.

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. During February 2013, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, Canyon Movement Company will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
