SUMMARY:FREE Master Classes with Cathy Davalos (Scottsdale)
DESCRIPTION:Class is offered on a first come first serve basis. \nCatherine Marie Davalos is a Chicana choreographer. Her work emerges from her Mexican voice using a feminist\, Latina\, and Chicana perspective. The Davalos Dance Company has been presented at various venues across the country since its inception in 1994. DDC has performed at various San Francisco Bay Area venues and festivals including the Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers\, CounterPulse\, ODC\, and the San Francisco International Arts Festival. Davalos also created work for the Latin Ballet of Virginia. Her full-evening work Volver received numerous grants including one from the National Endowment for the Arts. Through a partnership with the city of Panicale in Umbria\, Italy\, DDC performed there in 2016 and 2018 (2020 was canceled). Davalos has been honored with the support of the Zellerbach Family Foundation\, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation\, and the Faculty Development Office of Saint Mary’s College. Her work has been praised in the Richmond Times-Dispatch\, DanceViewTimes.com\, the Los Angeles Times\, and the Washington Post. Davalos is a Professor of Dance at Saint Mary’s College of California.

SUMMARY:Skinner Releasing Workshop (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:Men and women of all ages (professional dancers\, mature movers\, inexperienced dancers\, and folks that love to move in a meditative and spontaneous way) are invited to participate in this class. The use of playful and deep imagery and improvisation is incorporated and the classes build on each other. \nYour commitment to the series is a large part of the experience. \nSRT reveals the natural grace in every human being and taps into transforming states of  consciousness which awakens the Dance within and guides us in the practice of letting go; letting go of stress\, letting go of unnecessary holding in our body\, letting go of preconceptions about what is supposed to happen\, letting go of fear of awkwardness\, letting go of the belief that we somehow don’t have the “right body”. \nTactile exercises are used to give the imagery immediate physical effect in the movements of participants. \nTwo class sessions will be offered on Friday evenings from 4:30-6pm and Saturday mornings from 10-11:30am at the sYnapse at Studio Y. Session 1: January 10-February 1. Session 2: February 7-28. $120 per session or $220 for all 8 weeks.
