Registration required to receive Zoom link. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Vaswati Ghosh \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Vaswati Ghosh is the residential faculty for History and Political Science. Vaswati grew up in Mumbai\, India and completed her Ph.D. from the University of London\, U.K. She is multilingual\, and fluent in the Indian languages: Hindi\, Bengali\, and Marathi.  She has been teaching at PVCC since 2006\, and has found the perfect opportunity for sharing her international experience and love for teaching.  Vaswati has taught a variety of courses: History of Asia\, World History\, History of United States\, History of the Middle East\, Western Civilization and World Politics. She is a global traveler\, and loves to integrate her travel experiences into the classroom. She is committed to her discipline\, presents research papers\, attends conferences on American History\, Association for Asian Studies\, Asian Studies Development Program\, American History Journal\, Journal of American Heritage\, and Political Science Quarterly. \nVaswati’s primary research interests are in the history of colonization\, Indian diaspora\, gender and immigration. She is closely involved in numerous clubs that encourage the study of diversity\, ethnicity\, and equity in the college and the local community. She has lived in the United States\, United Kingdom and India\, where students have varied in ethnicity\, nationality\, age\, and culture. Her experiences with students from Mexico\, South America\, Europe\, Africa\, the Middle East\, India\, China\, Japan\, and Russia\, as well as students with learning disabilities\, first generation students\, gives her the sensitivity and understanding of individual differences and inter-cultural communication. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Calvin Schermerhorn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCalvin Schermerhorn is Professor of History at Arizona State University who teaches American history and researches capitalism\, slavery\, and racial inequities. He is the author of The Plunder of Black America: How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made (2025)\, Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery (2018)\, The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism\, 1815-1860(2015)\, and Money over Mastery\, Family over Freedom: Slavery in the Antebellum Upper South (2011). He is co-editor of Rambles of a Runaway from Southern Slavery by Henry Goings (2012).

SUMMARY:ASU Spring Dance Fest (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:Spring Dance Fest is an annual juried performance featuring the most innovative work of the Arizona State University dance season\, bringing together a dynamic collection of new works created within the School of Music\, Dance and Theatre. \n\nSpring Dance Fest\nWhen: 7:30 p.m. April 24–25; 2 p.m. April 26\nWhere: Galvin Playhouse Theatre\, ASU Tempe campus \nTicket information can be found here. \n\nThis 2025–26 season\, the pieces selected by the program committee reflect a wide range of choreographic voices\, drawing from different movement traditions\, creative processes and artistic perspectives. \n“The program moves through a wide range of choreographic landscapes\, from quietly unfolding duets to large-scale ensemble works\,” said Mitchell Castro\, dance graduate student and associate artistic director of dance this year. “Each piece offers a distinct perspective on movement\, inviting audiences into worlds shaped by curiosity\, collaboration and the evolving voices of ASU dance artists.” \nAudiences will experience works by guest artists Akosua Akoto and Joan Rodriguez; faculty choreographer MK Ford; and ASU student choreographers Ashley Koclanis\, Astrid Camacho\, Diana Toledo\, j. bouey and Yi Peng. \n“The works are brought to life by a large ensemble of ASU dancers\, each piece offering a distinct choreographic voice and approach to movement\,” said Mitchell. \nRodriguez said he was thrilled to work with ASU students. A Cuban-born dancer\, choreographer and educator known for his dynamic versatility and signature blend of Afro-Latin\, contemporary and multimedia movement\, Rodriguez is currently in his fourth season with BODYTRAFFIC in Los Angeles. \n“I think that some of the smartest artists that I have encountered are trained and based here\,” said Rodriguez. “My best advice is to really take in as much as you can of your teachers\, the amazing faculty that you have here\, and how much this city has to offer in regards to growing as a wholesome\, holistic artist — not just as a dancer.” \nHis work is a tribute to where he is now\, to his home country of Cuba and to what it feels like to be home. He said he wanted to create a work that “feels like you are being pulled back to the best memories you ever had.” \nAkoto has worked as a performer\, choreographer\, cultural consultant and movement coach for recording artists\, films\, major award shows\, dance tours and music videos. Her work features both traditional and contemporary West African dance styles. \nAkoto’s choreography for Spring Dance Fest\, “Farafina Muso\,” will be presented in three parts: “Maraka” comes from the Soninke people in the Kayes region of Mali and is performed to welcome the Marakafoli people when they arrive for social festivities like weddings. The dance is designed to welcome the audience to the piece. “Koredjuga” is from the Bamana people of Guinea and Mali\, who are known for their comedic wisdom — they perform for the public in a mime-like or gesture fashion as they give life lessons. The last track is a fusion of dances from Guinea and Mali that honors African women\, mothers and young girls. The featured dances and techniques are also taken from several other traditional rhythms including Yokui\, Guinea Fare\, Mane\, Kassa\, Bao\, Yankadi and Yamama. \n“Throttle\,” by Clinical Assistant Professor MK Ford\, features a live performance created with ASU students. It is a perfect platform for dance companies to get exposure\, promote their work\, and to connect with others in the dance community and the general public. High school mariachi music\, elementary school ballet folklórico dances\, and free arts activities are just a few of the things attendees will enjoy during this event. \nThe festival will have a variety of educational and arts activities for youth of all ages\, including free books\, hands-on crafts\, and activities that get excited feet moving to the beat of the live music. The festival brings together both established and emerging artists\, creating a space for them to share their work. She began her training as a young girl in San Antonio where she studied and performed Mexican Folklorico\, Spanish classical dance\, flamenco\, ballet\, jazz and other progressive dance forms. \nShe performed with a variety of dance groups which paved the way for her to be the lead dancer and eventually the choreographer for internationally acclaimed celebrity and performer\, “Charo.” Elizabeth performed on television as well as shows in Las Vegas\, Reno\, Atlantic City\, Hawaii and on luxury cruise lines. \nElizabeth studied with José Molina\, La Chiqui\, Timo Lozano\, Susanna Di Palma and Matilda Coral\, among many others. While living in Minnesota\, she was a member of Susanna Di Palma’s company\, Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater\, and was part o the studio’s teaching staff. She lectured and demonstrated dance forms for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Cultural Partners program an the Young Audiences of Minnesota series. She also received a grant rom the Jerome Foundation. During this period\, Elizabeth was honored to be featured as a classical Spanish dancer in a special solo performance with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra. She  additionally performed as a dancer in the opera Carmen. \nSince moving to Arizona\, Elizabeth has performed with various groups and has taught or the Maricopa Community Colleges\, School of Ballet Arizona\, and Arizona School for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Third Times a Charm as Once Upon a Bachelor Returns For Season 3 \nMesa\, Arizona\, February 16\, 2024 — CaZo Dance Theatre leap to the stage this Spring to debut season three of their wildly popular\, full-length dance production\, Once Upon a Bachelor. \nAlthough much of the show stays true to its roots\, season three opens its doors to the show’s first fairytale bachelor\, Reyrana\, Prince of Padovia. “The original idea for the show was to showcase a dozen fairytale princesses vying for the love of an ordinary man\,” says CaZo Creative Director and Choreographer Bridgette Borzillo. “But as the show continues to grow in popularity\, we have to keep upping our game. Having the bachelor also be a fairytale character felt like a perfect next step in the show’s evolution.” \nTo build even more excitement for the show\, Borzillo called upon the show’s fans to choose which characters from past seasons would return. “Once Upon a Bachelor has always been an interactive experience. Allowing the people to vote for which characters would appear in this new season added a new level to what makes this show so popular.” \nLike its predecessors\, Once Upon a Bachelor Season 3: Third Times a Charm includes plenty of pre-recorded “confessionals” sprinkled throughout the show. With 35 different possible outcomes due to 8 voting opportunities and Audience participation\, each performance will be an exciting and fresh experience. \nOnce Upon a Bachelor Season 3: Third Times a Charm will be performed LIVE at Tempe Center for the Arts (700 W. DESCRIPTION:Join Esperanza Dance Project for our annual Emerging Choreographers Showcase at the Tucson Jewish Community Center Jill Rosenzweig Memorial Sculpture Garden on April 7th. The event will include site specific performances choreographed by Esperanza dancers in response to sculptures in the garden as well as: art shown by local artists\, a founder’s talk\, and the premiere of EDP’s new middle school oriented performance ProjectRIS. Although designed primarily with the ASU community in mind\, Latin Sol also welcomes and cherishes participation by outside members of the dance community.
