DESCRIPTION:Dancing Earth Auditions\nINDIGENOUS CONTEMPORARY DANCE INTENSIVE CHOREOGRAPHIC SESSION \nDance Theater West\, 3925 E Indian School Rd\, Phoenix AZ 85018 \nContact: Desiree Ong\, ude.usanull@gno.eerised\, 480-965-3940 \nDANCING EARTH\, in partnership with ASU Gammage\, welcomes Arizona dancers to a choreography intensive with award winning choreographer Rulan Tangen\, founding artistic director of Dancing Earth. \nThis extended workshop includes a short warm-up\, improvisation\, and experience of the imagery\, rigor\, and cultural engagement of Dancing Earth’s practice through choreographic phrases. \nMs. Tangen is an award winning choreographer known as a social change artist with work that is culturally rooted with  thematic narratives and ethic that prioritizes place and people with community sourcing\, intercultural exchange and creative collaboration with artists\, ‘land dance’ process\, re story-big of the body\, and a wide scope of interdisciplinary approach to dance theater. \nParticipants would be considered for potential of paid professional inclusion in Dancing Earth’s 3 week residencies and touring in October\, December and January in California\, New Mexico\, Arizona and future projects 2020 – 2021. For dancers with less availability\, there will also be an opportunity to be invited to future workshops and participate a short dance for the January show in Tempe. \n  \nSession will include choreography and improvisational elements of Between Underground and Skyworld\, a new work that explores Indigenous futurism\, renewable energy in the form of ancestral knowledge\, and characters of apocalypse survivors who become Indigenous eco warrior super heroes. \nDancing Earth – founded in 2004 – is celebrated by Native communities for as cultural ambassadorship\, and is distinctive in world dance for creating inclusive intercultural exchange opportunities\, dignified living wage for culturally rooted artists\, and continually exploring and deepening a cultural approach to theater that is deemed by participants as decolonizing and healing. Past productions have been ecologically themed \, and Dancing Earth is one of only two companies to have been selected for both National Dance Project and National Theater Project support. Ms Tangen’s teaching and choreography for stage\, non-proscenium sites\, film\, opera and circus\, has been invited to 18 states and 8 countries and awarded with many honors including Dance Magazine one of “25 To Watch”; Native Arts and Cultures Foundations Fellowship for Artistic Innovation; Costco medal for Education\, Service and Community; and Kennedy Center Citizen Artist award for Service\, Justice\, Freedom\, Courage and Gratitude. \n  \nAll participants are welcome and candidates for extended touring would ideally have: \n  \n– training that includes practices of up to 8 hrs per day (in any discipline: powwow\, break dance\, ballet\, modern etc ) \n– Cultural familiarity with their ancestral lineage of lifeways and place\, and/or ability to research \n– experience or interest in interdisciplinary creative expressions such as song\, story\, spoken word poetry\, Indigenous languages \n– dramatic capacity for expressive movement at a scale suitable for theater or large scale sites such as canyons as well as more intimate scale for film and photography \n– experience with learning choreography\, with partnering forms ( supported lifts\, rolls etc ) and with improvisation \n– experience teaching\, including with youth\, elders and non-performers \n– ability to engage with people for press and community events \nPlease bring a resume and headshot\, if possible. \nFacebook Event

It is a perfect platform for dance companies to get exposure and promote their work\, to have a performance opportunity without having to incur the costs of producing a full performance\, to experiment with new work\, and to connect with others in the dance community. \nWe are excited to announce that the Arizona Dance Festival 2019 has expanded to a two part event: \nPart One of the festival will be held at the prestigious Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (SCPA) in Scottsdale\, AZ on September 19-21\, 2019. The SCPA is a landmark performance center\, seating 853\, which allows for a uniquely broad exposure\, larger audience\, a wide range of activities\, and a high level of technical capabilities. \nPart Two of the festival will be held at the beautiful Yavapai College Performing Arts Center (YCPAC) in Prescott\, AZ on October 3-5\, 2019. YCPAC is Northern Arizona’s premier entertainment venue\, seating 1\,064 and provides a professional performing experience for all. \nCompanies and individuals are chosen through an unbiased adjudication process\, with attention given to professionalism\, diversity\, creativity and dynamic performance. Applications are accepted from anywhere from around the world\, though preference is given to Arizona dance artists and companies. \nDANCE FILMS are also strongly encouraged for submission.  Proposals for teaching master classes are also being accepted. \nThe festivals will give you or your company great exposure\, and it’s a fun way to share your art with colleagues from around the state as well as guest dance artists from beyond. \n________________________________________________________________ \nWHO CAN APPLY? – The Arizona Dance Festival is open to dancers\, choreographers\, dance companies\, emerging dance artists and pre-professional dance ensembles of any dance form. She continues onto her 20th year with her program at Chavez while she just recently earned her Masters in Educational Administration with Principalship. \nClass Description: Modern Dance Technique\nThis class starts with the power and grounded qualities of yoga and core conditioning while stretching the muscles for full mobility. The exercises while familiar are unique as they challenge the mover to explore strength and performance dynamics while utilizing the power of music. The class sequence moves through floor work to explore all boundaries in all dimensions to get to standing where the mover will challenge themselves with exercises inspired by ballet and modern technique with an added Dulce flavor where we challenge the body through balances\, extensions\, arches while achieving certain musical expressions. The movers will experience across the floor combos to challenge locomotive coordination while the class concludes with an expressive center combination and stretch. Your Daily Practice is key. The exercises while familiar are unique as they challenge the mover to explore strength and performance dynamics while utilizing the power of music. The class sequence moves through floor work to explore all boundaries in all dimensions to get to standing where the mover will challenge themselves with exercises inspired by ballet and modern technique with an added Dulce flavor where we challenge the body through balances\, extensions\, arches while achieving certain musical expressions. The movers will experience across the floor combos to challenge locomotive coordination while the class concludes with an expressive center combination and stretch. Your Daily Practice is key. The SCPA is a landmark performance center\, seating 853\, which allows for a uniquely broad exposure\, larger audience\, a wide range of activities\, and a high level of technical capabilities. \nPart Two of the festival will be held at the beautiful Yavapai College Performing Arts Center (YCPAC) in Prescott\, AZ on October 3-5\, 2019. YCPAC is Northern Arizona’s premier entertainment venue\, seating 1\,064 and provides a professional performing experience for all. \nCompanies and individuals are chosen through an unbiased adjudication process\, with attention given to professionalism\, diversity\, creativity and dynamic performance. Applications are accepted from anywhere from around the world\, though preference is given to Arizona dance artists and companies. \nDANCE FILMS are also strongly encouraged for submission.  Proposals for teaching master classes are also being accepted. \nThe festivals will give you or your company great exposure\, and it’s a fun way to share your art with colleagues from around the state as well as guest dance artists from beyond. \n________________________________________________________________ \nWHO CAN APPLY? – The Arizona Dance Festival is open to dancers\, choreographers\, dance companies\, emerging dance artists and pre-professional dance ensembles of any dance form. She danced with several professional companies including Keshet Dance\, Paul Dance Productions\, and Brazil Dance Productions.  Alicia lived in Belo Horizonte\, Minas Gerais/Brazil\, for 7 years and danced with Mario Nascimento Dance Company\, had a leading role in the Beatles musical Because\, and presented solo work Solivagant and Arco-Iris as a member of Rede Sola de Dança. As a teacher and choreographer she was the Assistant Choreographer and Rehearsal Director for Contemporary Dance Company\, Sala B directed by Fernando de Castro; taught at the world renowned Grupo Corpo\, and also at the dance and art conservatory\, Palácio das Artes where she choreographed for the Graduating class of 2015 with a piece entitled Wanderlust.  Since moving to Phoenix she has performed and presented work at the BlakTina Dance Festival\, Breaking Ground\, The Black Theatre Troupe’s Black Nativity\, the Beta Dance festival\, for Southwest Ballet Theaters Harvest Gala\, and at the Phoenix Art Museum with Jam Movement and Sentidos Dance. Alicia is currently working on projects and teaching at Glendale Community College and Grand Canyon University. \n \nClass Description:  Modern / Brazilian Contemporary \nThis class will be physically challenging and incorporate the Horton\, Dunham\, Graham and other modern dance techniques along with Brazilian contemporary floor work and cultural influences. The classes begin standing and incorporates exercises that each focus on a different idea\, such as descent/ascent and laterals\, center balance control\, isolations\, and heating up body parts such as quadriceps\, the lower leg and/or abdominals\,  followed by stretching exercises for flexibility that leads into a sequence of floor work. The SCPA is a landmark performance center\, seating 853\, which allows for a uniquely broad exposure\, larger audience\, a wide range of activities\, and a high level of technical capabilities. \nPart Two of the festival will be held at the beautiful Yavapai College Performing Arts Center (YCPAC) in Prescott\, AZ on October 3-5\, 2019. YCPAC is Northern Arizona’s premier entertainment venue\, seating 1\,064 and provides a professional performing experience for all. \nCompanies and individuals are chosen through an unbiased adjudication process\, with attention given to professionalism\, diversity\, creativity and dynamic performance. Applications are accepted from anywhere from around the world\, though preference is given to Arizona dance artists and companies. \nDANCE FILMS are also strongly encouraged for submission.  Proposals for teaching master classes are also being accepted. \nThe festivals will give you or your company great exposure\, and it’s a fun way to share your art with colleagues from around the state as well as guest dance artists from beyond. \n________________________________________________________________ \nWHO CAN APPLY? – The Arizona Dance Festival is open to dancers\, choreographers\, dance companies\, emerging dance artists and pre-professional dance ensembles of any dance form. The performance is limited up to a maximum of 10 minutes per dance. \nAUDITION APPLICATION FEE – There is a non-refundable application fee of $25 for the first submission and $10 per additional submissions. \nPARTICIPATION FEES – If selected to perform\, there is a participation fee per dance/per venue of $50 (solo)\, $75 (duets)\, $100 (3-5 dancers) and $150 (6 or more dancers). Each performance will showcase different dance artists/groups.
