But how do we maximize skill learning in our clients? This lecture will introduce you to the science behind skill acquisition and how to directly apply that to teaching movement\, be it dance\, Pilates\, yoga or any other movement-based practice. The lecture is centered on the teacher’s role in facilitating skill learning. \nABOUT GREGORY YOUDAN\nGreg Youdan\, MA\, MS is a dance scientist with a Masters in Motor Learning and Motor Control from Teachers College\, Columbia University. He has guest lectured at Columbia University Medical Center\, Barnard College\, New York University\, University of Rochester among others. He sits on the development and strategic planning committee for the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) and the research committee for the National Organization for Arts in Health (NOAH). \n\nTammy Rosen\, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and Dance Educator \nTammy will teach a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson for the feet that can be done sitting in a chair or on the floor. \nThe Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education is a powerful and revolutionary approach to improving your life that uses gentle\, mindful movement to bring new awareness and possibility into every aspect of your life. Developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais\, the Feldenkrais Method has helped millions of people worldwide. \nYou can increase your ease and range of motion\, improve your flexibility and coordination\, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful\, efficient movement. Since how you move is how you move through life\, these improvements will often enhance your thinking\, emotional regulation\, and problem-solving capabilities. \nThe Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics\, biomechanics\, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. Moshe Feldenkrais said\, “We move according to our perceived self-image.” By expanding your perception and increasing awareness\, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity\, the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully\, efficiently\, and comfortably. \nABOUT TAMMY ROSEN\nTammy completed four years of training in the Feldenkrais Method at the Feldenkrais Institute of San Diego in 2010. As a professional modern dancer\, teacher\, choreographer and former dance studio owner\, she is intimately aware of the importance of good bio-mechanics for optimal performance. It is her passion to help others improve in their chosen field or recover from injury or other limitations. SUMMARY:H.T. Chen & Dancers: Performance Offerings
DESCRIPTION:H.T. Chen & Dancers is a leading Asian American contemporary dance company based in NYC. Artistic Director\, H.T. Chen is known for having created a body of work addressing Chinese American labor and immigration. The company conducts extensive educational programs in NYC\, has been presented by Lincoln Center Institute\, the Kennedy Center\, and many sites in the US including ASU Gammage – Public Events.  In 2021\, H.T. and his Associate Director/Education Director Dian Dong created a K-12 curriculum for Dance Education Lab titled Tracing Footsteps – Into the Heart of Chinatown\, Hidden Voices.   \nIn late January-early February 2022\, H.T. Chen & Dancers will be sharing an excerpt of a signature work\, “South of Gold Mountain” with Desert Dance Theatre. Performances of the combined cast will be offered to schools and community as part of a cultural diversity program\, lecture demonstration or mini-residency presentation. \nDesert Dance Theatre will ultimately recast the work entirely with Arizona performers and be able to present the work throughout 2022. Both H.T. Chen & Dancers and Desert Dance Theatre have a long history of programs based on cultural diversity as well as educational programs for their communities. This marks the first time that another company will perform an excerpt of South of Gold Mountain.  \nCreated through oral histories\, the excerpt ”Box Dance\,” was inspired by small\, family-run Chinese grocery stores throughout the American southern and southwest states. Through playful and imaginative partnering\, the daily tasks of stocking shelves and lifting boxes celebrates work ethic and community building. \n \nEarly Chinese settlers called America “Gold Mountain” because of the California Gold Rush in the mid 1800’s. The title South of Gold Mountain has two meanings: it refers to a geography – the southern states\, and implies that there were hardships as in the saying “when things go south”. \n“As an original cast member of H.T. Chen’s South of Gold Mountain\, I have a close personal connection to the history of Chinese grocers in the south\, because it’s my family’s story\, a part of American history unknown to many and rarely taught in the schools. ” – Lisa Chow \n“Meaningful cultural presentations bring greater awareness and appreciation of the building of America.
Later in the Spring 2022\, performances will be offered to schools and community as part of a cultural diversity program\, lecture demonstration or mini-residency presentation. \nDesert Dance Theatre will be able to present the work throughout 2022. I am pleased to partner once again with Lisa Chow and her talented artists.”  – H.T. Chen \nHere is an interview from 2013\, based on the development of South of Gold Mountain while the piece was in progress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JigsHHIFb4I \nThe month of May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, recognizing the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history\, culture\, and achievements in the United States. \nSometime during May-June 2022\, members of H.T. Chen & Dancers will be coming to Arizona offering a presentation focused on the Chinese American experience. This cultural diversity presentation will include Desert Dance Theatre in the combined cast. They will also conduct a Master class open to community dancers and dance educators on the company’s foundational movements based on Yin/Yang principals and planal organization. \nCovid Guidelines: As a precaution to the continued Covid pandemic and its unpredictability\, proof of vaccination or proof of negative covid test within 72 hours and wearing masks will be required in enclosed dance studio and performance spaces. \nH.T. Chen studied traditional dance and Chinese Opera Movements at the University of Chinese Culture in Taiwan\, attended The Juilliard School as a dance major\, and received a master’s in Dance Education from NYU.  Dian Dong graduated from The Juilliard School\, and performed in the companies of Kathryn Posin\, Anna Sokolow\, and toured with The King & I. Together\, they founded Chen Dance Center’s school and theater in the heart of Chinatown\, NY. \nDespite the displacement from a major fire in 2020 followed by the pandemic and xenophobia\, H.T. Chen & Dancers is still thriving. Recently\, the company restaged H.T. Chen’s Hidden Voices at Williams College and presented numerous outdoor performances in NYS and MA. Both H.T. and Dian served as Grand Marshals of the 2021 Dance Parade\, and will be featured in the oral history collection at the NYPL – Jerome Robbin’s Dance Division. \nFor more information: gro.retnececnadnehcnull@ofni \nOr:  www.chendancecenter.org \nIf interested in bringing this cultural diversity presentation or master class to your school or community\, please contact Lisa R.
