DESCRIPTION:Sol Rhythmz is the third event of the Sol Motion series within the Arizona State University Dance Department. It focuses on the dance traditions of the Senegambia region and the emergence of the dance forms within the diaspora\, specifically looking at the Caribbean. Participants will take a journey through dances from West Africa to the Caribbean. This day-long event features workshops\, a panel discussion and a social hour. This unique setting will give audiences a taste of what is happening in Arizona’s dance scene. Applications are accepted from anyone from around the world\, but priority is given to Arizona dance artists and companies first. \nGUIDELINES – Dance works and films will be chosen through an unbiased adjudication process\, with attention given to artistry\, professionalism\, diversity\, creativity and dynamic performance. The performance is limited up to 10 minutes or less per dance. Dance works must not have been performed within a 30 mile radius from the event venue and not less than one month prior to the festival dates. THIS FESTIVAL IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT WHICH APPEALS TO A WIDE AUDIENCE. DANCE WORKS MUST BE APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. \nAUDITION APPLICATION FEE – There is a non-refundable application fee of $25 for the first submission and $15 per additional submissions. \nPARTICIPATION FEES (IF SELECTED): \nSTAGE PERFORMANCE – If selected to perform\, participants must pay a participation fee per dance/per night of $25 (solo)\, $50 (duets)\, $75 (3-5 dancers) and $100 (6 or more dancers). \nDANCE FILM – If selected\, the participation fee is $25 per dance film/per night. \nThe participation fee will help cover expenses related to facility rental\, production\, tech staff and publicity. \nGRANTS – If awarded any grants\, we will waive the participation fee\, and allocate a stipend to participants selected to perform. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy a distinct evening performance\, ranging from classical to contemporary\, on an outdoor stage filled with sparkling lights and intricate costumes. \nFree and open to the public\, Ballet Under the Stars allows Arizona communities to enjoy dance in a unique outdoor setting. You won’t want to miss this show for the entire family – it is a great way to introduce ballet to your children for the first time! \nNo ticket or RSVP is required to attend\, however an RSVP is requested to help us estimate attendance numbers and keep you informed of any event changes. \nThis performance will take place outdoors in Dr. A.J. This unique setting will give audiences a taste of what is happening in Arizona’s dance scene. It is a perfect platform for dance companies to get exposure\, promote their work\, and to connect with others in the dance community and the general public. Each evening performance will showcase different dance artists including emerging artists as well as professional companies from all genres and styles of dance. \nThis year’s festival will feature special guest dance artist\, Christina Johnson\, a founding member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet and former principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem. Christina will perform a premiere solo as part of a new dance ensemble\, “Absoluta” under the direction of visionary and award-winning choreographer\, Anandha Ray. \nA post-performance “Q & A” will be facilitated by the Arizona Dance Coalition directly after the show. The “Q & A” will allow the audience to engage in lively conversation with the artistic directors and choreographers for insights in the creation of their dance works. \nArizona Dance Festival Master Classes will be offered before and during the week of the show. SUMMARY:FREE Community Master Class with Contra Tiempo (Phoenix)
DESCRIPTION:FREE Community Master Class with Contra Tiempo\nA native of Cuba\, Kati Hernaìndez grew up surrounded by the sounds of the drum and Afro-Cuban dance traditions. Her dance studies included Afro-Cuban and international folklore\, popular\, modern\, ballet\, choreography\, composition\, and staging. These shaped her into the electrifying choreographer\, educator\, and dancer of today. Her knowledge of dance and choreography reveals her intricate and versatile style\, making her a highly sought-after performer nationally and internationally. She launched her international career at an early age\, touring throughout Europe\, the Caribbean\, and the Americas with renowned Cuban productions\, musicians\, and visual artists. \nIn her hometown of Los Angeles\, Kati is a central figure in a large dance community. She was recently presented with a Community Leader of Excellence 2023 award honoring her artistry\, work\, and leadership. She is dedicated to spreading the treasures of her Afro-Cuban roots in the US. Her nationally acclaimed signature program Oricha Dance Therapy\, which she is currently touring with\, is a language of expression through movements and rhythms of the rich Afro-Cuban Dance diaspora. Hernaìndez is founder of a pioneering online dance\, and music program that preserves and promotes Cuban culture worldwide to create vibrant cross-cultural communities. She is also founder and artistic director of Kimbambula Cuban Dance and Music Ensemble\, and co-founder of Kimbambula Productions. The latter serves as a platform to promote Cuban culture in LA where she produces annual events such as “Essence of Cuba” a paramount reunion of Afro-Cuban masters\, Kati’s Cuban Ganga\, and The Cuban Social. \nKati has led successful Afro-Cuban “Jam Sessions” at both Grand Park and the Ford Theater\, where she served as lead choreographer for several of their programs and has also co-hosted dance workshops with the acclaimed Afro-Cuban rock band\, Siìntesis. More recently\, Kati was artistic director for the joint production “Cuba Antes y Ahora\,” at Grand Park and the Getty Museum\, as well as the choreographer and cultural advisor of “Tentacion” a new production at the Walt Disney Concert Hall for LA Philharmonic’s Pan-American Youth Initiative. She has choreographed and performed in music videos including “Un Poquito de Amor Every Day” with world renowned Colin Hay and San Miguel Perez\, and Iris Sandra Cepeda’s “Vete Por Donde Vinistes.” \nThis a community dance opportunity so please share with your networks.
