SUMMARY:BlakTinx Dance Festival
DESCRIPTION:BlakTinx returns this November with a powerful mix of brand-new voices showcasing the depth and range of Latinx and Black choreographers shaping today’s dance. Celebrating our 9th year\, this year’s lineup features fresh work by Alecea Housworth\, Thiditsana “Didi” Moloi\, RaShawn Hart\, RAIMIZ\, Diana Toledo\, Leonardo A. Caudillo\, Brayan Perez\, and Alex Solano\, artists whose visions span themes of love\, resilience\, identity\, and cultural memory. \nJoining them are special guest artists: Angel Castro (California)\, who first lit up our stage in 2017; Hannah Victoria (Oregon)\, whose work last moved Phoenix audiences in 2019; and Arizona’s own J. Bouey (Tempe/NYC) Bessie Award–winning choreographer and Tranze Danza Contemporánea (PHX/Mexico)\, bringing their signature artistry home to our community with international dancers. \nAudiences can expect a magical\, high-energy\, and emotionally charged evening filled with the intimacy of solos\, the electricity of ensembles\, and the creative range that defines BlakTinx. The program features twelve works—six before intermission and six after—spanning street styles\, contemporary dance\, deeply personal storytelling\, and bold experiments with form. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime; arrive early to grab a seat and enjoy the bar\, which will be open with spirits and refreshments. Please plan ahead for parking: we recommend the Arizona Center garage (401 E. Fillmore St.)\, where discounted $6 validations are available at the Herberger box office. November is a busy month in downtown Phoenix\, so give yourself plenty of time to arrive and settle in!

SUMMARY:"A Visit to Mother Winter": A Winter Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance Solstice Celebration \n“A Visit to Mother Winter”\n“…The well disappeared\, and they were standing in the middle of a broad field of silvery snow. There was no sign of either sun or moon\, but the sky above seemed to glow with a silvery light\, and in the distance there was a grove of trees with white bark that seemed to shine from within…” – excerpt from “A Visit to Mother Winter” adapted tale by Starhawk. \nAs the shortest day of the year\, the winter Solstice marks the turning from the cold\, dark days of winter to the warmer\, lighter days of spring and summer. Historically\, this season is a time of reflection\, renewal\, and community celebration. With each Solstice celebration we envision honoring the interconnectedness of our humanity as we move forward to grow\, evolve\, and change with the return of the sun. This year’s winter theme reflects on past lessons and the gifts we share through the journey of life.  Join us for a magical adventure that inspires the lessons which transcend age and gender.  This celebration begins on Wednesday\, December 21st at 8pm at Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre located in the Historic Y at 738 N 5th Ave. \nThe Solstice Celebration show combines the art of narrated storytelling with the visual component of dance to bring a festive and unique holiday tale to life on the stage. This show is the culmination for ZUZI! Dance’s community workshop and youth aerial workshops hosted this fall in preparation for this performance. Both groups will bring their talents to the stage in vital story roles. ZUZI! Dance will feature choreography by ZUZI! dancers Maddie Brown\, Aja Squires and Cofounder Nanette Robinson. The evening will also feature guest artist performances and choreography by Charlotte Adams with 520 Dance Company\, Vanessa Corona\, Amy Faulk with Leaps for Lives and musicians\, Cantrell Maryott\, Vicky Brown and Anton Shekerjiev. The production includes a dress rehearsal at 6:00pm that is open to the public and the main performance at 8:00pm. Registration to the dress rehearsal is by donation only while tickets to the featured performance are only available for pre-sale. The lobby of Scoundrel and Scamp will open at 6:30pm for refreshments and raffle viewing. The raffle will include Arts and Craft\, Entertainment\, Health and Wellness and Culinary Baskets. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased for $3 each. \nZUZI! Dance has been a community-centered\, artist driven dance space for over two decades. Their vision for Tucson is a place where aerial (trapeze)\, somatic dance and contemporary-modern movement is a regular part of the cultural landscape. This performance has been a long-standing tradition for ZUZI! to create a space and opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to work\, move\, learn\, and grow together. Participants have ranged in age from 7 to 72. This multi-generational approach to dance is rooted in ZUZI!’s belief that individual perspectives shared and shaped with others creates a healthy community. SUMMARY:Leaps for Lives 10th Annual Fall Showcase (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:Leaps for Lives 10th Annual Fall Showcase\nNovember 5\, Saturday\, 5:30 pm  | Tickets \nDemeester Outdoor Performance Center at Reid Park \nThe Leaps for Lives Dance Company is proud to announce the 10th annual Leaps for Lives Dance Showcase. We are thrilled to celebrate a decade of dance on a mission by hosting this show in person for the first time since 2019. This community-based production welcomes a variety of talented guest artists and local vendors along with food trucks and raffle prizes for an evening of fun for a good cause. Vendors open at 4:30 pm at the Demeester Outdoor Performance Center at Reid Park. \nGuest performers include 520 Dance Company\, FUNHOUSE Movement Theater\, Siva Maia Polynesian Dancers\, ZUZI! Dance\, University of Arizona Black & Blue Crew\, and Dancesequences Inc. \nEach year Leaps for Lives donates 100% of the Fall show proceeds to a local 501(c)3 that represents an area of animal welfare. We strive to choose beneficiaries that address community issues with a focus on marginalized and underserved areas. Over the past decade we’ve learned that the biggest strain on animal welfare organizations is pet overpopulation. There are simply more pets in our community than there are homes to care for them. Spaying and neutering our pets is vital to prevent the unwanted litters that are brought to shelters and rescues or abandoned each year. \nBENEFICIARY \nThis year we have chosen Spay and Neuter Solutions\, a local 501(c)3 that provides affordable spay and neuter services to pet owners in order to reduce the number of homeless pets in Southern Arizona. During the past 19 years\, Spay and Neuter Solutions funded 29\,651 spay and neuter surgeries\, ultimately saving the lives of countless cats and dogs. We are excited to support their mission and promote a better future for our favorite companions.

This urban Latin dance theater experience takes on joy as the ultimate expression of resistance. Whenever humans have survived immense hardship and injustice\, prevailing with their humanity intact\, the presence of joy has always been at the root. joyUS justUS reclaims the dominant deficit–based narrative of people of color in this country as being underprivileged\, voiceless\, powerless\, and victimized\, and flips it on its head by embodying stories of joy. \n  \nREASON TO SEE IT: The combination of the athletic\, expressive and rhythmic dances of CONTRA-TIEMPO with the irresistible charm and musical energy of Las Cafeteras is a powerful mix and message that will have you on your feet in no time.
