SUMMARY:BANDALOOP Vertical Dances on the UA MALL! (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:BANDALOOP Vertical Dances on the UArizona Campus MALL! \nArizona Arts Live (formerly UA Presents) brings us BANDALOOP to dance vertically on the UArizona Mall buildings during Reading Days March 9-10 (no Spring Break this year). It’s outside! Wear your masks and stop the spread! \nMar 8\, 10a-1p & 3p-6p | Mar 9\, 1p-6p | Mar 10\, 10a-1p & 3p-6p | Mar 11\, 1p-6p \nBANDALOOP honors nature\, community\, and the human spirit through perspective-bending\, vertical dance. Using buildings on the UArizona Campus Mall as a dance floor on its side\, BANDALOOP creates a new and original performance suited for the times we are all living in. \nYouTube promo \nA pioneer in vertical performance\, BANDALOOP seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality\, intricate choreography\, and climbing technology to turn the dance floor on its side. BANDALOOP’s site-reactive work has been presented worldwide in theaters and museums\, on skyscrapers\, bridges\, billboards\, and historical sites\, in atriums and convention halls\, in nature on cliffs\, and on screen. \nBANDALOOP will be performing continuously during the times listed above. These experiences are part of the March 9-10 Reading Days. The faculty senate approved a decision to replace the 2021 Spring Break with a series of Reading Days spread throughout the Spring 2021 semester. This adjustment to the academic calendar is a necessary component of our ongoing commitment to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the Tucson community and across the nation by reducing travel by faculty\, staff and students. \nABOUT BANDALOOP \nFounded by choreographer Amelia Rudolph and under the artistic direction of Melecio Estrella\, BANDALOOP re-imagines dance\, activates public spaces\, and inspires wonder and imagination in audiences around the world. The company trains dancers and youth at home and on tour\, and has performed for millions of people in over 22 countries in Europe\, Africa\, the Middle East\, the Americas\, and Asia\, and on screens in films and digital media. \nBANDALOOP is based in Oakland\, CA\, where the company creates work for its bi-annual home season and for touring performances presented around the globe each year.  Education and outreach are also an intrinsic part of the company’s mission. In addition to its ongoing work with youth\, BANDALOOP offers regular classes\, camps\, and intensives at its home studio and in the mountains\, and team building programs for business executives.

SUMMARY:Scorpius Dance Theatre presents Lisa Starry's A VAMPIRE TALE (PHX)
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Starry’s A VAMPIRE TALE\nScorpius Dance Theatre Presents 16th Anniversary Season of Annual Fall Haunt “A Vampire Tale” \nThis fall season\, from October 3-12\, 2019\, Scorpius Dance Theatre presents its popular production\, A Vampire Tale. Dubbed “’The ‘Nutcracker’ of Halloween\,” the yearly haunt is celebrating its 16th anniversary season. Longtime fans won’t want to miss this year’s show\, as the performance includes exciting new changes with the arrival of long-time Scorpius members stepping into the lead roles as King and Queen of the vampires. \nAccording to choreographer Lisa Starry\, “This year’s production of A Vampire Tale has an imaginative and exciting energy. Our new King\, Haydehn Tuipulotu\, and Queen\, Kalli Sparish\, have both been members of Scorpius for over 8 years. It’s thrilling to have fresh ideas come to our classic production as they step into our lead roles. Audiences can expect the same high octane\, high quality spectacle of Scorpius\, and with our new vampire royalty\, audiences can also expect several new surprises.” \nA Vampire Tale indulges audiences with all the trimmings: dark and sexy drama\, quirky and comedic episodes\, and visually stunning dance and aerial feats. This popular\, sell-out production pre-dates all of the vampire pop-culture and evolves annually to keep fans coming back for more. \nIn the plot line of A Vampire Tale a young woman is drawn to the dark side and finds herself lured into an assorted band of bloodsuckers. Frightened\, yet fascinated by their shadowy showmanship and seductive moves\, the girl struggles to avoid becoming part of their underworld when she becomes infatuated with the King vampire. \nA Vampire Tale showcases 17 talented dancers and aerialists. Haydehn Tuipulotu and Kalli Sparish premiere in their roles as the King and Queen of Darkness. Longtime Scorpius Dance Theatre dancer\, Martha Hernandez\, will return for the fourth year in the role of the Innocent. Making a guest appearance for the fourth year in a row\, Louis Farber will play the side-splitting narrator role of Strange Man. SUMMARY:L.O.V.E by Scorpius Dance Theatre
DESCRIPTION:From June 7-9\, Scorpius Dance Theatre will present L.O.V.E\, an all original show choreographed by Scorpius’ Director\, Lisa Starry\, with live original music by Kristofer Hill. L.O.V.E debuted in 2016 and will return for the second time to a smaller\, more intimate venue at Metropolitan Arts Institute. L.O.V.E is a series of short stories portraying the various types of relationships and stages of love that impact our lives. Told through dance\, theatrics and live music\, this unique production will take audiences on a journey of emotions while exploring one common theme: love is everything. In L.O.V.E\, Starry explores a variety of relationship dynamics and stages of love\, which range from serious to lighthearted and oftentimes humorous scenarios. As can be expected\, the various points in romantic relationships are portrayed\, including first love\, fairytale weddings\, and the changing dynamics of a marriage after having a child. In addition\, Starry expresses other personal interactions\, including sibling rivalry\, motherly love\, expressing forgiveness\, loss of someone close\, and finding confidence and support in friends. Many of L.O.V.E’s original works will be returning\, but Starry will also be adding some new stories to the show. Accomplished composer\, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist\, Kristofer Hill will join the stage with the dancers during the entire production of L.O.V.E. As well as providing vocals\, he will play a variety of instruments\, including guitar\, drums\, keyboard and a baby grand piano. Also unique to this show\, L.O.V.E features a much smaller cast then is typical for Scorpius productions. Additionally\, all of the dancers remain on stage during the production\, forming an exterior circle behind the dancers who are performing. They create a stage audience\, engaging with one another and responding emotionally to each piece. \nL.O.V.E is June 7 & 8 at 7:30 pm and June 9 at 2 pm and 7:30 pm. It will be held at Metropolitan Arts Institute\, 1700 N 7th Ave #100\, Phoenix\, AZ\, 85007. Tickets start at $25. For more information\, visit www.scorpiusdance.com.

SUMMARY:'Woven' - 20th Annual Solstice Celebration with ZUZI! Dance & Collaborators
DESCRIPTION:A ZUZI! Dance 20th Annual Solstice Celebration…\nAs the shortest day of the year\, the winter Solstice marks the turning from the cold\, dark days of winter to the warmer\, lighter days of spring and summer. Historically\, this season is a time of reflection\, renewal\, and community celebration.  ZUZI! Dance production and local dancers\, aerialists\, and musicians from the Tucson performing arts community and the weaving community will host this show. This collaborative effort highlights the elemental qualities of weaving. \nFor this Solstice celebration\, we envision honoring the interconnectedness of our humanity as we move forward with the return of the sun…\nBecause the art of weaving is a profound metaphor for understanding the workings of the universe and our place in it\, through the physical process of weaving\, we gain a better understanding of this world and how we as human beings are woven into it. We are bound to our bodies with the fragile threads of earth. Our skeleton is a loom on which every system is strung and woven. The meeting of opposite elements woven into a whole is the quest of many seekers to find meaning in their life. The art of weaving is the essential art of creating the unified one of two opposites. Interestingly\, archaeological findings suggest that weaving is at least 20\,000 years old\, but because weavings are so organic and biodegradable\, no physical evidence this old has been obtained. \nJoin us for an evening of performing arts featuring…\n“Woven” is directed/choreographed by Nanette Robinson\, with special guest artist and choreographer Mirela Roza and Navajo weaver Marlowe Kutoney. During the performance there will be lobby demonstrations by Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild. In addition to the dancers in the cast\, ZUZI! Dance holds a youth aerial workshop and a community workshop that are open to anyone to learn a piece of choreography\, which is incorporated within the show. This year woven into the the community piece is the newly formed dance company\, Dancesequences\, Karenne Koo\, Director. \nThese Solstice Community Workshops have been a long-standing tradition for ZUZI! to create a space and opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to work\, move\, learn and grow together. Participants have ranged in age from 7 to 72. This multi-generational approach to dance is rooted in ZUZI!’s belief that individual perspectives shared and shaped with others creates a healthy community. \nIn the spirit of interconnection…\nWe will be hosting a gallery fiber arts display from local and regional weavers that will be on sale\, as well as our annual silent auction fundraiser. This year\, ZUZI! will be accepting donations for Sister Jose Homeless Shelter for Women of sweaters\, scarves\, socks\, hats\, gloves.  Bring a donation and you will receive a $2 discount for show. For tickets and additional information\, visit our website\, or call us at (520) 629-0237.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Dance Concert Tucson
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance presents Summer Solstice: A Dance Concert \n“This is the time of the rose\, blossom and thorn\, fragrance and blood. Now on this longest day\, light triumphs\, and yet begins the decline into the dark. The Sun King grown embraces the Queen of Summer in the love that is death because it is so complete that all dissolves into the single song of ecstasy that moves the worlds. So the Lord of Light dies to Himself\, and sets sail across the dark seas of time\, searching for the isle of light that is rebirth. We turn the Wheel and share his fate\, for we have planted the seeds of our own changes and to grow we must accept even the passing of the sun.” (The Spiral Dance\, HarperCollins\, 1999\, p. 205) \nSpecial Guest Choreographers –\nChaos Theory Dance: \nChaos Theory Dance\, a “quick-come-pick-me-up” company directed by Billbob Brown since 1999\, takes its name from the science of complexity\, which finds meaningful patterns in apparently unpredictable systems\, such as weather\, clouds\, traffic\, populations\, and relationships. Through improvisation and set choreography\, interactions with musicians\, video\, cartoons\, or dialogue\, and with a lot of zaniness\, CTD makes work that is fun and emotionally accessible\, letting audiences “ooh” and “ahh” while being intellectually challenged. The company has performed at Jacob’s Pillow\, and in colleges and theaters across the country\, including Harvard\, Roger Williams University\, and MIT. Recent projects have been with Kristen Miller\, cellist\, who was named 2004 Female Artist of the Year by Jam Magazine; DuoJalal; Stephen Katz\, and other musicians. Previously based in Massachusetts\, the company is now re-established in Tucson\, Arizona. \n \nMAC & Company:\nMAC & Company is a Phoenix based 501(c)3 non-profit modern dance company founded from a shared passion for dance education and performance between Micaela Church and Li Pei Khoo in 2014.
