As of 8/9/21\, Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) remains committed to a health and safety conscious approach to minimizing the spread of COVID-19 in our community. In response to the CDC’s new mask guidance\, the City of Tempe reinstituted a mask requirement for all individuals who enter city facilities\, including TCA\, regardless of vaccination status. DESCRIPTION:Amor al Baile 6 World Dance Extravaganza presented by Yumi La Rosa Flamenco Dance Company\nDirect from Spain\, Isaac Tovar\, Flamenco dancer and choreographer touring the globe\, is joining the show this year that will not only feature Flamenco\, but also Kathak\, Belly Dance\, Contemporary and more. \nGuest Tovar is a former soloist of the Ballet Nacional de España\, Compañía Andaluza de Danza\, Compañía Antonio “El Pipa\,” Compañía Aída Gómez\, among many other premier national and international companies including Flamenco en route (Switzerland) and Flamenco Vivo (NYC).  Isaac performed as a semifinalist in the LIX Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas. He is the recipient of the 1st prizes at the renowned Concurso Nacional de la Perla de Cádiz\, the IV Concurso Internacional de Danza in Almería\, and the XXVII Concurso Nacional de Ubrique\, as well as the 2nd prize for Solo Choreography in the XXV Certamen de Coreografía de Danza Española y Flamenco in Madrid. In 2018 Tovar debuted his first solo production “Añejo” at the Centro Cultural de la Villa in his hometown Seville. In 2019 his production “Generaciones” premiered at the prestigious Teatro Real in Madrid. This event closes the annual largest ‘folklife festival’ in Arizona held in Downtown Tucson October 11-13\, Friday-Sunday. TMY information here. \nSHOW #1 – Doors open – 5:30 pm for Performance – 6-7 pm \nSHOW #2 – Doors open – 7:30 pm for Performance – 8-9 pm \nPLEASE NOTE: Reservations will only be held until showtime\, then released to waiting list audience. \nTablao Flamenco is an intimate and traditional setting for presenting the interaction of cante (song)\, baile (dance)\, and toque (guitar). Performing on a percussive wood platform called a tablao (tablado)\, artists often improvise music and movement to establish new styles and expressions. Tablao is one of the most important forms of flamenco presentation in Spain and beyond\, a place to celebrate both experimentation and cultural heritage. Flamenco Tucsonense cultivates the art form here in Tucson to share a unique voice in the flamenco world. \nAbout the ARTISTS: \nNevarez Encinias (dancer) has trained in flamenco since his early childhood. He began studying pre-professionally at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, under the guidance of his grandmother Eva\, father Joaquín\, and aunt Marisol Encinias. Nevarez became an apprentice dancer in Yjastros: the American Flamenco Repertory Company in 2006. He was promoted to Corps dancer in 2014 and to Soloist dancer in 2017. In 2014\, Nevarez received his BA in History of Art from Yale University\, and in 2018\, he received a Master of Fine Arts in Dance degree from the University of New Mexico. He has studied with a wide range of internationally-acclaimed Spanish dance artists\, including Antonio Canales\, Olga Pericet\, Jesús Carmona\, Gala Vivancos\, Daniel Doña\, Mercedes Ruiz\, Pedro Córdoba\, and Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños. Nevarez’s MFA thesis concert\, Sensaciones y emociones\, was presented at the University of New Mexico in September 2017. He currently teaches both flamenco and Modern Dance in the University of New Mexico’s Dance Program\, as well as at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts. \nEloy Gonzales (guitarra) began his study of Flamenco at Tierra Adentro de Nuevo México charter school in 2010 and was introduced to flamenco by American Flamenco Repertory Co. dancers Alisa Alba and Elena Osuna and company guitarist Mario Febres. Receiving a scholarship to the National Institute of Flamenco’s Conservatory of Flamenco Arts\, he studied dance under Joaquin and Marisol Encinias and guitar under Ricardo Anglada. Eloy has since dedicated himself to the study of Flamenco guitar while also studying music at the University of New Mexico. He has performed nationally in theaters and festivals such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Music in the Park festival in Atlanta\, Georgia. Eloy continues his musical study with Calvin Hazen and Mario Febres. \nMisael Barraza (guitarra) – Winner of numerous international guitar competitions\, Misael is from Sonora\, Mexico and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Arizona. \nOlivia Rojas (cante) – From El Paso\, Olivia is the Co-Director of Flamenco Por La Vida; she has studied music for over 15 years and is Arizona’s premiere flamenco singer. \nJason Martinez (cajon/baile) – From Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, an American hub of flamenco art\, Jason has studied percussion and dance for more than 20 years. He was an original member of Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company\, and teaches flamenco in Tucson. \nMelani “Mele” Martinez (baile) – With more than 35 years of dance training\, Mele is a Tucson native and nationally recognized flamenco artist.
