SUMMARY:Silambam Phoenix presents Waves of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Silambam Phoenix proudly presents WAVES OF RESISTANCE: An Investigation of the Nature of Revolution \nSunday May 31\, 2026 – 3pm (Poster Session)\, 3:30pm (Show) Monday June 1\, 2026 – 7pm (Poster Session)\, 7:30pm (Show) \nASU Kerr\, 6110 N Scottsdale Rd\, Scottsdale\, AZ 85253 \nTickets available at www. silambamphoenix.org \nThis dance theatre production is an investigation of what motivates the common person to join movements of resistance. We compare the similarities between the Boston Tea Party and the Salt March of the Indian independence movement. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1773\, a group of British colonists rebelled against their government and its unfair taxation policy by throwing hundreds of pounds of tea into Boston Harbour. \nIn 1930\, a group of people from various communities and backgrounds gathered to march to the sea in Gujarat\, India to make salt in defiance of the British tax of salt. \nBut how did they get here? What pushes the ordinary person to participate in revolution? \nWaves of Resistance is a comparative production which places these two points in history next to each other. Through music\, dance\, and theatrical storytelling\, the students of Silambam Phoenix present two tales of two disparate sets of people fighting for their right to self-governance. \n$20 Early Bird Tickets available until May 14\, 2026 \n$30 Tickets available until June 1\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\nASU Center for the Study of Race and Democracy is a presenting partner and are presenting a poster show on the background behind the two movements. We also have a moderated feedback session after each show. \nThis event is made possible due to the support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Phoenix Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Black Grace
DESCRIPTION:Making its Arizona debut\, Black Grace brings the raw power and ceremonial depth of Pacific Island movement traditions to the stage as it redefines what contemporary dance can be. \nNoting the company’s innovative flair and theatricality\, The Boston Globe says Black Grace “packs the raw visceral power of a primal communal rite into a carefully constructed form of rigor and sophistication.” The work itself is highly physical\, rich in the storytelling traditions of the South Pacific\, and expressed with unique beauty and finesse. \nDrawing from his Samoan and New Zealand roots to create innovative dance works that reach across social\, cultural\, and generational barriers\, Artistic Director Neil Ieremia has changed the face of contemporary dance in New Zealand and turned Black Grace into one of the most recognizable and iconic cultural brands. \n“The distinguishing spirit of this troupe is incredible speed and stamina\, an exhilarating\, seemingly inexhaustible energy.” — The New York Times \nAbout the Company \nBlack Grace is New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance company. It was founded in 1995 by Neil Ieremia (Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit)\, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished choreographers\, a creative entrepreneur\, and an inspirational leader. Ieremia draws from his Samoan and New Zealand roots to create innovative dance works that reach across social\, cultural\, and generational barriers. The Company features some of New Zealand’s finest dancers and has toured internationally to Europe\, Japan\, South Korea\, Mexico\, Australia\, and New Caledonia. In 2004\, Black Grace made its US debut\, performing a sold-out season at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
