SUMMARY:"A Visit to Mother Winter": A Winter Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance Solstice Celebration \n“A Visit to Mother Winter”\n“…The well disappeared\, and they were standing in the middle of a broad field of silvery snow. There was no sign of either sun or moon\, but the sky above seemed to glow with a silvery light\, and in the distance there was a grove of trees with white bark that seemed to shine from within…” – excerpt from “A Visit to Mother Winter” adapted tale by Starhawk. \nAs the shortest day of the year\, the winter Solstice marks the turning from the cold\, dark days of winter to the warmer\, lighter days of spring and summer. Historically\, this season is a time of reflection\, renewal\, and community celebration. With each Solstice celebration we envision honoring the interconnectedness of our humanity as we move forward to grow\, evolve\, and change with the return of the sun. This year’s winter theme reflects on past lessons and the gifts we share through the journey of life.  Join us for a magical adventure that inspires the lessons which transcend age and gender.  This celebration begins on Wednesday\, December 21st at 8pm at Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre located in the Historic Y at 738 N 5th Ave. \nThe Solstice Celebration show combines the art of narrated storytelling with the visual component of dance to bring a festive and unique holiday tale to life on the stage. This show is the culmination for ZUZI! Dance’s community workshop and youth aerial workshops hosted this fall in preparation for this performance. Both groups will bring their talents to the stage in vital story roles. ZUZI! Dance will feature choreography by ZUZI! dancers Maddie Brown\, Aja Squires and Cofounder Nanette Robinson. The evening will also feature guest artist performances and choreography by Charlotte Adams with 520 Dance Company\, Vanessa Corona\, Amy Faulk with Leaps for Lives and musicians\, Cantrell Maryott\, Vicky Brown and Anton Shekerjiev. The production includes a dress rehearsal at 6:00pm that is open to the public and the main performance at 8:00pm. Registration to the dress rehearsal is by donation only while tickets to the featured performance are only available for pre-sale. The lobby of Scoundrel and Scamp will open at 6:30pm for refreshments and raffle viewing. The raffle will include Arts and Craft\, Entertainment\, Health and Wellness and Culinary Baskets. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased for $3 each. \nZUZI! Dance has been a community-centered\, artist driven dance space for over two decades. Their vision for Tucson is a place where aerial (trapeze)\, somatic dance and contemporary-modern movement is a regular part of the cultural landscape. This performance has been a long-standing tradition for ZUZI! to create a space and opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to work\, move\, learn\, and grow together. Participants have ranged in age from 7 to 72. This multi-generational approach to dance is rooted in ZUZI!’s belief that individual perspectives shared and shaped with others creates a healthy community. SUMMARY:Ballet Tucson presents Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Ballet Tucson presents their SPRING CONCERT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 24-26\, 2023 | Friday 7 pm\, Saturday & Sunday 2 pm \nLeo Rich Theater | 260 S Church\, Tucson \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFIRST LIGHT | Ballet Tucson premiere\nChoreography by Price Suddarth\nMusic by Carly Comando\nFirst Light is a high energy ensemble work focusing on speed\, strength\, and most of all the freshness of a new day. Much like the dawn— when everything is still before us— the dancers tear open the space with abandon. Through the journey of the piece we experience joy\, challenge\, and heartache…all the components of a beautiful complex day\, and ultimately life. The dancers elegantly and seamlessly knit these varied arcs together with power and finesse\, reminding us that our lives are more than any singular moment. \nWALPURGISNACHT BALLET\nChoreography by George Balanchine\nMusic by Charles Gounod (from Faust)\nWalpurgisnacht Ballet was choreographed for a 1975 production of Faust by the Théâtre National de l’Opéra\, danced by the Paris Opera Ballet. The New York City Ballet premiere was the first presentation of the choreography as an independent work. The Walpurgisnacht scene occurs at the beginning of the opera’s last act\, when Mephistopheles brings Faust to watch the traditional celebration on the eve of May Day when the souls of the dead are released to wander at will. Although the ballet does not depict Walpurgisnacht per se\, it does build on a sense of joyful revelry. \nPresented with permission by the George Balanchine Trust. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJOPLIN\nChoreography by Mark Schneider\nMark Schneider has long been a favorite choreographer of Ballet Tucson audiences. His delightfully charming and vivacious Joplin creates the perfect combination of ballet and jazz. This “Broadway Ballet” is Schneider’s homage to the King of Ragtime Scott Joplin and brings a joyful conclusion to our 37th season. \nBOSSA NOVA |\nChoreography by Chieko Imada\nLove and laughter abound in this comedic work for five dancers by Resident Choreogrpaher Chieko Imada. Set in a 1950s Bossa Nova lounge\, new connections lead to great confusion and great romance. We look forward to bringing this crowd-pleasing piece back to the stage! \nFOOTPRINTS AT THE FOX PREMIERE | Winning Choreographer Brooke Amundrud\nThis season’s winning work of our Footprints at the Fox performance will appear in our Spring Concert.\n“Exile’s Jig” | Our audience voted “Exile’s Jig” their favorite piece of the evening. Brooke\, a Ballet Tucson Senior Apprentice\, created the powerful and compelling work that you will now have the opportunity to see on the main stage as part of our Spring Concert at the Leo Rich Theater \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
