The student and community performers will have participated in residency sessions facilitated by Desert Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director\, Lisa R. This production is a beautiful story of a courageous woman’s determination to free her people from slavery through the Underground Railroad. She was one of America’s first liberated woman of color\, who fought against all odds for the sake of freedom and equality. Our goal in producing this program is to bring light to the incredible accomplishments of the anti-slavery activist\, Harriet Tubman. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe school field-trip performances of Sister Moses are open to all schools throughout the Phoenix area schools and other surrounding areas. Admission to the school matinees is $5\, and must be arranged by prepaid reservations only. The unique blend of this 45-minute multidisciplinary presentation highlights the most important episodes of Harriet Tubman’s life\, and shares the knowledge and experience of her struggles and accomplishments that will bring a source of inspiration to our audience. \nThe program follows Tubman’s life as a young slave on a Southern Plantation\, her attempts to escape slavery\, her work on the Underground Railroad\, and her contributions to the Abolitionist movement. Slave songs from that period are featured for their significance as a means of passing information among the slaves. Hidden in the lyrics were vital escape details. \nBringing history to life through music\, dance and drama\, Sister Moses promises to be entertaining\, educational and truly inspirational! \nThe Sister Moses Residency and Performances is supported by the Central High School Black Students’ Union and the Arizona Commission on the Arts which receives support from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and private contributors. \nDesert Dance Theatre is a contemporary dance company known for its diverse modern dance repertory\, interdisciplinary collaborations\, and major thematic productions which address important historical as well as current issues. \nDon’t miss this exciting performance of music\, dance and drama! \nFor more information\, call 480-962-4584 or go to www.DesertDanceTheatre.org or https://desertdancetheatre.org/sister-moses/. \n—30—

SUMMARY:Camille A. Brown & Dancers\, Mr. TOL E. RAncE (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:Camille A Brown & Dancers\, Mr TOL E RAnce\n“Mr. TOL E. RAncE had it all – heart\, mind\, soul\, passion\, full-out dancing and introspective solos…Add high production values and a gifted cast\, who gave it their all\, and you have one heck of a show.”  THE HERALD SUN \nInspired by Mel Watkins’ book\, “On The Real Side: From Slavery to Chris Rock”\, Spike Lee’s controversial movie\, “Bamboozled”\, and Dave Chappelle’s “dancing vs. shuffling” analogy\,  this evening-length dance theater work celebrates African-American humor\, examines “the mask” of survival and the “double consciousness” (W.E.B. DuBois) of the black performer throughout history and the stereotypical role dominating current popular Black culture. \nThrough comedy\, animation\, theater\, soul-stirring live music by Scott Patterson and poignantly retrospective dance\, Mr. TOL E. RAncE speaks to the issue of tolerance – how much Black performers had to tolerate – and addresses the forms of modern-day minstrelsy we tolerate today. It is not a history lesson. Blending and contrasting the contemporary with the historic\, the goal of this personal work is to engage\, provoke\, and move the conversation of race forward in a timely dialogue about where we have been\, where we are and where might go. \nCentennial Hall\, 7:30 pm.
