SUMMARY:ASU Gammage presents GRUPO DE RUA (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:GRUPO DE RUA\n\n\nOctober 12\, 2024 at 7:00pm\n\n\n Tickets \nIt’s hip hop but not as you expect! Beltrão has revolutionized the genre\, deconstructing the dance form as he grapples with the changing politics of his native Brazil. Expect high jumps\, head spins\, somersaults\, fast kicks and twirling twists. His intense choreography with GRUPO DE RUA is characterized by physical urgency and an analytic understanding of music and space. \nResponding to the radical shift to the right\, he ponders what happens when a political scene creates disharmony\, polarizes the people and limits freedom and equality. The artistic community provides glimmers of creative resistance and uses art to drive change. \nHis previous work “Inoah”\, was an eye-popping\, jaw-dropping\, gravity-defying blitz of artistic brilliance. He combines sophisticated stage craft with contemporary dance and raw hip-hop which casts a spell over audiences worldwide.

SUMMARY:Contra-Tiempo's ¡AZÚCAR! (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:ASU Gammage Beyond Series \n“¡azúcar!”\n\nNovember 16\, 2024\n\nContra-Tiempo’s ¡AZÚCAR! is a courageous naming/confrontation of an intentional obliteration of the undercurrent and often unspoken anti-Blackness in latinidad. Questions are continuing to drive the process as we begin to understand the complicated history of sugar and the messages from our ancestors. What does it feel like to individually and collectively heal\, what does it move like? 20 brilliant artists and collaborators take audiences through a journey of Celia Cruz’s vibrations\, unearthing history embedded in our bodies. Through ¡AZÚCAR!\, we explore ancestral wisdoms about a plant that once aided in our healing\, used as a way to sweeten medicinal concoctions\, now extracted\, refined and used as weaponized poison. This courageous work is rooted in and inspired by the sacred feminine\, personal narratives of food\, labor\, community\, sabor and explorations of ‘familying’ and healing as practices. \nMaster Artist and Afro-Cuban practitioner\, Kati Hernandez\, is a core collaborator and guest performer in the work.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts presents Hung Dance from Taiwan
DESCRIPTION:SCPA is offering 15% off on tickets! Use promo code: DANCEAZ \nCheck out info about the company and the featured performance: https://scottsdalearts.org/whats-on/events/hung-dance/ \nSet to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music\, BIRDY takes audiences on a journey from tradition to modernity\, seamlessly blending tai chi with contemporary dance in the Taiwan-based company’s Arizona premiere. A captivating dance piece by choreographer Hung-chung Lai\, BIRDY explores the interplay of freedom and limitations within Taiwan’s communities through societal dynamics and personal narratives. Lai uses symbolism and the deconstruction of traditional Chinese opera props to examine both Western mythologies and Eastern traditions. Acclaimed choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano brings this full-length ballet to the stage\, inspired by tauromaquia—the art of bullfighting—breathing a modern life into the legendary opera character through Ballet Hispánico’s electrifying CARMEN.maquia. Carmen has become a cultural icon\, inspiring generations of composers\, choreographers\, and writers to attempt to capture her elusive and alluring nature. One of today’s most sought-after choreographers\, Sansano’s quintessential ballet invigorates this timeless tale with an unrelenting energy that leaves you breathless.
