SUMMARY:Sedona Choreography Retreat Sedona Chamber Ballet and Ballet Arizona Collaborate
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nSedona Choreography Retreat: Where Visionaries Create the Future of Dance \nDates: June 11–13\, June 15–20\, 2025\nFinal Showcase Performance: June 20\, 2025\nWebsite: sedonaballet.org/retreats \nSet against the breathtaking backdrop of Sedona’s iconic red rocks\, the inaugural Sedona Choreography Retreat is an extraordinary convergence of artistic brilliance\, innovation\, and collaboration. Over the course of ten electrifying days\, world-class artists will come together to create new works that will premiere in an exclusive final performance—offering audiences a rare glimpse into the future of dance. \nAt the heart of the retreat is Nayon Iovino\, renowned choreographer and Artistic Director of the retreat. Known for his emotionally resonant and visually stunning work with Ballet Arizona\, Iovino will debut a brand-new ballet inspired by the haunting compositions of Christel Veraart. Drawing from Veraart’s evocative album Nostalgia and her latest audiovisual creation Santa Fe & Esmeralda – Nostalgia\, Iovino’s new work promises a profound fusion of music\, imagery\, and movement. \nJoining him is the incomparable LaTasha Barnes\, an award-winning dancer\, choreographer\, and scholar celebrated for bridging Black social dance traditions with contemporary innovation. At the retreat\, Barnes will unveil the Flow State Project—a groundbreaking interdisciplinary performance that translates live movement into real-time digital soundscapes. Each gesture creates a sonic imprint\, inviting audiences into an immersive sensory world where rhythm\, energy\, and technology converge. \nIn collaboration with the nationally recognized Ballet Arizona\, the Sedona Choreography Retreat brings together an elite ensemble of Ballet Arizona’s professional dancers alongside top emerging talent from Arizona State University’s prestigious dance program. Together\, these visionary artists are creating a collaborative environment rarely seen outside of major metropolitan centers. \nThroughout the retreat\, the public is invited to engage deeply with the creative process through a series of Conversation Workshops\, Open Rehearsals\, and a Masterclass for local students. These events offer an unprecedented opportunity to witness the evolution of new works\, meet the artists\, and experience the dynamic collaboration between choreographers\, dancers\, musicians\, and designers. Aspiring young dancers will also have the chance to work directly with these distinguished artists\, receiving mentorship and inspiration to fuel their own artistic journeys. \nThe retreat culminates in an electrifying Showcase Performance on June 20\, 2025\, featuring world premieres and celebrated masterpieces: \nWorld Premieres \n\nNayon Iovino’s new ballet inspired by Christel Veraart’s richly atmospheric music and visual storytelling\nLaTasha Barnes’ Flow State Project\, a dynamic exploration of dance\, technology\, and cultural roots\n\nSpecial Repertoire Highlights \n\nExcerpt from Serenade by George Balanchine\nWith permission from The George Balanchine Trust\, audiences will experience Sonatina—an excerpt from Balanchine’s landmark Serenade. Set to Tchaikovsky’s lush score\, this piece captures the timeless grace\, sweeping musicality\, and emotional resonance that defined Balanchine’s revolutionary vision.\nTake Me With You by Robert Bondara\nA powerful pas de deux set to Radiohead’s haunting Reckoner\, Bondara’s celebrated duet has traveled the world from Roberto Bolle and Melissa Hamilton’s original performance to stagings at Stanislavsky Ballet\, Czech National Ballet\, and soon\, Dance Theatre of Harlem. It is a lyrical yet visceral meditation on connection\, longing\, and the unspoken dialogue between two dancers.\nVastwave by Natasha Adorlee\nEmmy Award-winning choreographer Natasha Adorlee brings her latest creation\, Vastwave\, to life with Ballet Arizona’s Studio Company dancers. Blending electrifying original sound design with kinetic contemporary movement\, Adorlee’s work captures the ebb and flow of human experience through evocative waves of sound and motion.\n\nThe Sedona Choreography Retreat represents a bold new chapter in dance innovation—blending classical excellence\, contemporary vision\, multicultural roots\, and cutting-edge technology in one of the most inspiring natural settings in America. \nThis is a rare opportunity to witness the birth of groundbreaking new works and experience the creative forces shaping the future of dance. \n🎟️ For full details and ticket information\, visit: sedonaballet.org/retreats

SUMMARY:H.T. Chen & Dancers: Performance Offerings
DESCRIPTION:H.T. Chen & Dancers is a leading Asian American contemporary dance company based in NYC. Artistic Director\, H.T. Chen is known for having created a body of work addressing Chinese American labor and immigration. The company conducts extensive educational programs in NYC\, has been presented by Lincoln Center Institute\, the Kennedy Center\, and many sites in the US including ASU Gammage – Public Events.  In 2021\, H.T. and his Associate Director/Education Director Dian Dong created a K-12 curriculum for Dance Education Lab titled Tracing Footsteps – Into the Heart of Chinatown\, Hidden Voices.  \nIn late January-early February 2022\, H.T. Chen & Dancers will be sharing an excerpt of a signature work\, “South of Gold Mountain” with Desert Dance Theatre. Later in the Spring 2022\, performances will be offered to schools and community as part of a cultural diversity program\, lecture demonstration or mini-residency presentation. \nDesert Dance Theatre will be able to present the work throughout 2022. Both H.T. Chen & Dancers and Desert Dance Theatre have a long history of programs based on cultural diversity as well as educational programs for their communities. This marks the first time that another company will perform an excerpt of South of Gold Mountain. \nCreated through oral histories\, the excerpt ”Box Dance\,” was inspired by small\, family-run Chinese grocery stores throughout the American southern and southwest states. Through playful and imaginative partnering\, the daily tasks of stocking shelves and lifting boxes celebrates work ethic and community building. \n \nEarly Chinese settlers called America “Gold Mountain” because of the California Gold Rush in the mid 1800’s. The title South of Gold Mountain has two meanings: it refers to a geography – the southern states\, and implies that there were hardships as in the saying “when things go south”. \n“As an original cast member of H.T. Chen’s South of Gold Mountain\, I have a close personal connection to the history of Chinese grocers in the south\, because it’s my family’s story\, a part of American history unknown to many and rarely taught in the schools. ” – Lisa Chow \n“Meaningful cultural presentations bring greater awareness and appreciation of the building of America. I am pleased to partner once again with Lisa Chow and her talented artists.”  – H.T. Chen \nHere is an interview from 2013\, based on the development of South of Gold Mountain while the piece was in progress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JigsHHIFb4I \nThe month of May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, recognizing the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history\, culture\, and achievements in the United States. \nSometime during May-June 2022\, members of H.T. Chen & Dancers will be coming to Arizona offering a presentation focused on the Chinese American experience. This cultural diversity presentation will include Desert Dance Theatre in the combined cast. They will also conduct a Master class open to community dancers and dance educators on the company’s foundational movements based on Yin/Yang principals and planal organization. \nCovid Guidelines: As a precaution to the continued Covid pandemic and its unpredictability\, proof of vaccination or proof of negative covid test within 72 hours and wearing masks will be required in enclosed dance studio and performance spaces. \nH.T. Chen studied traditional dance and Chinese Opera Movements at the University of Chinese Culture in Taiwan\, attended The Juilliard School as a dance major\, and received a master’s in Dance Education from NYU.  Dian Dong graduated from The Juilliard School\, and performed in the companies of Kathryn Posin\, Anna Sokolow\, and toured with The King & I. Together\, they founded Chen Dance Center’s school and theater in the heart of Chinatown\, NY. \nDespite the displacement from a major fire in 2020 followed by the pandemic and xenophobia\, H.T. Chen & Dancers is still thriving. Recently\, the company restaged H.T. Chen’s Hidden Voices at Williams College and presented numerous outdoor performances in NYS and MA. Both H.T. and Dian served as Grand Marshals of the 2021 Dance Parade\, and will be featured in the oral history collection at the NYPL – Jerome Robbin’s Dance Division. \nFor more information: gro.retnececnadnehcnull@ofni \nOr:  www.chendancecenter.org \nIf interested in bringing this cultural diversity presentation or master class to your school or community\, please contact Lisa R.
SUMMARY:Daniel Gwirtzman Master Class
DESCRIPTION:Chandler-Gilbert Community College Dance program hosts New York City based choreographer and dancer Daniel Gwirtzman for two FREE open master classes on October 15\, 2018. \nDaniel Gwirztman\, producer\, educator\, filmmaker and dancer – celebrates two decades as a New York City choreographer and company director. His diverse repertory for the non-profit Daniel Gwirztman Dance Company\, celebrating its 20th anniversary\, and other concert and commercial projects\, has earned praise for its humor\, stylistic diversity\, musicality\, charisma and accessibility. \nOct 15th 11:30 am – 12:50 pm – Choreographic Strategies For Making Dances Quickly \nGaining comfort making dances comes from the acquisition and practice of skills and a healthy portion of confidence. This class presents both\, essential compositional devices along with tips and strategies to empower you when thinking quickly on your feet. An array of choices can be available at all times. In the class we will make several quick studies and discuss them in a supportive and light-hearted judgment-free zone. \nOct 15 1:00 pm – 2:20 pm – Power\, Rhythm\, Speed: Modern Technique in Action \nRooted in Daniel’s contemporary choreography\, this energetic master class challenges the dancer’s coordination\, stamina\, and speed. Known for a unique style blending modern dance\, theater dance\, folk and ballet\, Daniel cultivates the physicality of the athlete and the expressivity of the artist. This fun technique class blends virtuosity with pedestrianism\, casualness with precision. Rewiring the body to tackle rhythmic work and unexpected coordination challenges the dancer both physically and intellectually. The objectives: to gain a total awareness of the entire body at all times; to cultivate a versatility; to aid in the development and proficiency of dance regardless of genre. \nBoth classes are FREE and open to all\, and are held at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Pecos Campus\, Agave Hall Room 1300 Dance Studio
