SUMMARY:UA Presents CHE MALAMBO (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:UA Presents CHE MALAMBO (Tucson)\nThe powerhouse all-male Argentinian dance company\, Che Malambo\, excites audiences with their percussive dance and music spectacle. Malambo is a dynamic blend of precision footwork\, rhythmic stomping\, drumming and song which originated in the 17th century in the South American pampas. It evolved from competitive duels amongst the Argentine gaucho (South American cowboy) that tested agility\, strength and dexterity. It soon evolved to include what is now its hallmark\, zapeteo\, the fast-paced footwork inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses. Malambo also features the drumming of traditional Argentine bombos and whirling boleadoras\, a throwing weapon made up of intertwined cords and weighted with stones. \n“A thrilling display…fourteen stomping\,drumming\, roaring men pounded rapid-fire rhythms into the ground with many surfaces of their feet – heels\, toes\, inside and especially the outside edges – and with spinning boleadoras\, floor skimming stones attaced to lassos…a rousing group spectacle.”  THE NEW YORK TIMES \nChe Malambo was born from the heart of the gaucho tradition and is now thrilling audiences around the world with this new production created by director and choreographer Gilles Brinas. Tickets $19-45. \nPhoto by Diane Smithers

SUMMARY:Leaps for Lives First Annual Spring Showcase (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:Leaps for Lives First Annual Spring Showcase (Tucson)\nJoin The Leaps for Lives Dance Company for an evening of choreographic exploration with the staging of new pieces and old favorites\, alongside works by featured guest artists. Proceeds from tickets sales benefit The HistioCURE Foundation. Tickets : $15 pre-sale and $20 at the door. Space is limited for this event. \nThe HistioCURE Foundation has been created with one purpose – to find a CURE for all histiocytic disorders. Their mission is to raise funds to support major research programs focused on finding a CURE for these diseases. Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is a rare form of pediatric cancer that has touched our dance company personally\, and while our founder and her son are on the brighter side of diagnosis\, there are still countless numbers of children and families facing the tribulation of pediatric cancer treatments and the life long consequences of those harsh treatments. Through this production\, we hope to support those families. \nAbout The Leaps for Lives Dance Company: Our mission is to raise funds and awareness for Southern Arizona pet rescue organizations through dance productions. We are dedicated to the art of dance and to the well-being of our four-legged companions. In 2016\, we expanded our mission to include raising funds and awareness of pediatric cancer organizations. \nAbout Us: We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization based in Tucson\, Arizona. We work with other community dance projects to create a diverse and exciting annual dance showcase benefiting Southern Arizona animal rescues. We are proud to have made thousands of dollars in contributions to local rescues in our first six years! \nSupport for the project is provided by The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona\, funded by the City of Tucson and Pima County. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Cabaret Papillon presents DancEstrella in This\, That and the Other (Avondale)
DESCRIPTION:Cabaret Papillon presents DancEstrella in This\, That and the Other (Avondale)\nEstrella Mountain Community College’s student company\, DancEstrella\, will present four performances of This\, That and the Other. This program features eleven Practicum dances including by Assistant Director\, Dalyla Bates; collaborative choreography by students in Performance classes; and group dances by Artistic Director\, Janaea Lyn McAlee and Ballet Arizona Guest Artist\, Colleen Buckley. \nPerformances will take place on Friday\, April 26 and Saturday\, April 27\, 2019 at 3 & 7 pm each day at the EMCC Performing Arts Center (PAC). Free and audience members will also have the opportunity to participate in a brief discussion with dancers at the end of the show. \nThe theme for the show is individuality and Professor McAlee explains that “Because of the range of dance styles and interpretations of the theme which interested the Practicum students\, the shape of the production lent itself to a revue or cabaret style format. We decided to create an environment that represented a supper club and called that Cabaret Papillon. The production’s title of This\, That and the Other captures the creative diversity of the student’s choreography.”   DancEstrella (above) – Photo by Nina Couch \n \nThe Performance and Practicum dances (final projects by dance majors) incorporate ballet\, modern\, contemporary\, jazz\, old school hip-hop and West African dance. These styles are combined in unexpected ways to explore individuality through the lens of self-discovery\, relationships and community. Kyara Parker (right) will also perform her solo which was awarded 1st place Solo Performance\, and 2nd place Solo Choreography at the Maricopa Artist of Promise Dance competition. Photo by Linda Keyes \n \nIncluded in this performance will also be a piece created by Ballet Arizona’s Colleen Buckley (right)\, who was in residence with EMCC in March.
