SUMMARY:DancEstrella (Estrella Mtn CC) presents Visibility (Avondale)
DESCRIPTION:DANCESTRELLA PRESENTS Visibility\nESTRELLA MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER \nAPRIL 29 & 30 | 3 pm & 7 pm both days \nEstrella Mountain Community College’s student company\, DancEstrella\, will present four performances of Visibility. This program features practicum dances (final projects by dance majors) by Deckontee Lowery and Assistant Director\, Denise Lopez; collaborative choreography by students in dance performance classes\, and a full company work by Artistic Director and faculty member Janaea Lyn McAlee. Two student choreographers from Buckeye Union High School District dance programs will also participate in this DancEstrella production. \nPresented by the Arts and Composition Division\, performances will take place at the EMCC Performing Arts Center (PAC) on Friday\, April 29 and Saturday\, April 30\, 2022\, with shows at 3 & 7 pm both days. General admission is free and audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a Q & A session with the dancers at the end of each show. Seating is limited and masks are encouraged. \nThe dances choreographed for Visibility are based on the students’ sense of personal identity and how that can contrast with the ways we are perceived by others. Professor McAlee explains “The quote we selected for the show is by Rumi\, ‘I differ a hundred ways from what you see me to be.’ The dances interpret different aspects of this idea. We can be intentional when we project a certain side of ourselves\, or conversely\, mask our true feelings.  Prejudice and stereotypes can also impact how and in which ways we feel seen or invisible.” \nThe practicum dances include I’ll Rise Up by Deckontee (Dee) Lowery. Dee was halfway through her final semester when the Covid-19 shutdown occurred two years ago. She returns to DancEstrella to finally present and perform in this work with three other graduating dance majors. I’ll Rise Up portrays her efforts to overcome many obstacles on her educational journey. With support from the college community\, she will finally graduate this May. The song Dee had selected\, Rise Up by Andra Day\, became a public of anthem for dealing with pandemic induced stress\, something she feels now adds to her dance in an even more poignant fashion. \nCurrently serving as Assistant Director for DancEstrella\, Denise Lopez\, will also present a quartet for her practicum project. Rhamnousia is a Greek name  for the goddess Nemesis. Denise described her intention this way\, “we live in a world where we are constantly moving like robots\, whether it’s physically or mentally. So\, we forget there are others living among us\, or can make assumptions about them too quickly. Once you do an act of kindness for a stranger\, the experience of joy found in a simple human connection can be transformative for both people.” \nGraduating dance majors\, Carissa Salgado-Garcia and Jade Teller\, joined the dance program before the pandemic and forged a strong bond during their time at EMCC. They will present a duet that celebrates their friendship as that special relationship with someone with whom you feel known and valued for who you fully are. \nNow You Don’t\, Now You See Me\, was inspired by the James Baldwin quote “‘Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within\,” Choreographed for the full company by Director McAlee\, she explains “I am interested in how what we conceal and what we reveal seems tied to how we have been wounded by the people in our lives. The defenses that we erect to protect ourselves ultimately becomes their own prison and it is through the support and care of others that we begin to let them to fall away.” \nOther dances choreographed and performed by the students in EMCC dance performance classes are collaborative reflections on the ways people choose to present themselves; the assumptions others make about us; and learning when\, how and with whom to disclose and/or hide aspects of their identity. For the first time\, student choreographers from Buckeye Union High School District dance programs will present their work as well. An outgrowth of the annual EMCC Dance Day\, this community connection provides high school choreographers with the opportunity to perform as part of a pre-professional college company and bring their dances to a larger audience. \nEstrella Mountain Community College offers an Associate of Fine Arts\, Emphasis in Dance degree and all dance classes\, including participation in DancEstrella\, are open to all EMCC students. \nVisibility Show Information: ude.niatnuomallertsenull@stnevE \nDance Program Information: Janaea Lyn McAlee\, Residential Dance Faculty | ude.niatnuomallertsenull@ecnad \nDancer: Denise Lopez | Photo by Linda Keyes

SUMMARY:Desert Dance Theatre performs for the free live-streamed National Water Dance Project "Dancing Out of Time!" (1 pm AZ time)
DESCRIPTION:NWD Projects presents the Live-Streamed 5th Bi-Annual National Water Dance \nDesert Dance Theatre is participating in this annual nationwide event for its 2nd time. We are honored to be a part of this meaningful event. NOTE: 1 pm Arizona time is 4 pm Eastern Time.  \nOn Saturday\, April 23\, at 4 pm EST (1 pm Arizona time) dancers across the United States from Seattle to Mississippi\, from Maine to Miami will join together in a nationwide simultaneous dance event at water sites\, rural and urban\, remote and public\, bringing attention to our need to be accountable for the water that sustains us. National Water Dance is an artist-driven collective of dancers\, students\, educators and community members who create simultaneous performances across the country. We invite everyone to come dance with us and engage in the actions on climate change that will help bring us back into balance with this precious planet that we all call home. \nThis year we are excited to welcome Felipe Barral and IGNI Productions who will be live streaming sites all over the country. The live stream will begin at 3:30pm EST (12:30 pm AZ time) with interviews and information about many of the participating organizations as well as environmental issues and a peek into participants’ creative processes. The performance will begin exactly at 1 pm AZ time\, 4 pm EST.   \nTo view the live stream go to:\nhttps://www.nwdprojects.org/national-water-dance/ \nCollective action is the only answer to climate change. It’s not one community’s problem. There is no place to run. We are… \nRUNNING OUT OF TIME… THE TIME IS NOW… \nJoin Us on April 23\, 2022! \n \nNWD Projects is proud to be the organizing institution for National Water Dance nationwide. National Water Dance is a biennial event comprised of an artist-driven collective of dancers\, students\, educators\, and community members who create simultaneous performances across the United States. The 5th National Water Dance will take place on April 23\, 2022 at 4 pm EST (AZ Time – 1 pm). The theme and title for this year is “Dancing Out of Time.” \nNational Water Dance \n \nThe mission of NWD Projects is to promote dance as a vehicle for social change by increasing awareness of environmental and social issues through collaboration with the artistic\, educational and scientific communities. NWD Projects makes use of the internet to create a national community\, which offers platforms for educating students and supporting artistic exchange among professional artists\, while engaging and informing the public. \nAs artists we know that creativity is born from conflict: conflict that is fed by questions\, by self-evaluation\, by new and diverse ideas from those who challenge us as we begin the process necessary to change. NWD Projects commits to this journey of creativity and to the goal of equity for all by supporting diversity in its many forms. We recognize that our present systems are based on inequality and we eagerly step into the work to correct the past structures and find a more balanced future. \nWe are honored and privileged to be able to do this work on lands that have been cared for by many indigenous communities of the past\, present\, and future. We encourage you to learn more about those people whose lands you occupy\, to learn about their environmental priorities\, and to do your best to support policies that integrate those conservation principles. \nClimate Change \nWe see it everywhere with flooding\, drought\, unsafe water. How do we begin to address such an overwhelming problem? Perhaps we see ourselves in the fortunate position where climate change isn’t affecting our daily life\, but just as nature’s ecosystems are based on a healthy codependency so are our communities\, urban or rural are based on the same. Climate gentrification\, fires\, floods are not just one community’s problem. It is a displacement of people\, contributors to the viability of their specific landscape and of whole communities with cultures and histories that form our communal understanding of place. Their displacement has ripple effects on all of us. Their displacement is the precursor to the ultimate changes in the lives of the rest of us. Collective action is the only answer to climate change. It’s not one community’s problem. There is no place to run. \nRunning Out of Time \nWe believe as dancers that one of the starting points comes with the physical understanding of our connection to the Earth; a connection that exists whether surrounded by forests or open fields or urban sidewalks; a connection that begets gratitude and a gratitude that begets reciprocity; what the Earth gives us we\, in turn\, should equally give back to the Earth. \nStrengthening our physical connection to the Earth strengthens how we connect to ourselves and how we connect to one another\, which ultimately shapes the future that holds us all. \nEvent History \nhttps://www.nwdprojects.org/national-water-dance-history/ \nNational Water Dance is a catalyst that encourages ongoing engagement between dance and the environment. Beginning in 2011 as a statewide project in Florida\, it now boasts 65 locations across the United States—in 2018 including Puerto Rico for the first time. With each event National Water Dance recommits itself to the effort of increasing purposeful awareness to drive action on environmental issues\, specifically climate change. Supporting the work of participants beyond our biannual event\, National Water Dance spreads the word on the environmental issues they are tackling through monthly newsletters and social media. Our goal is to realize the power of dance as an engine of social change. \n

SUMMARY:"HADESTOWN" ASU Gammage 2021-2022 Broadway
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to HADESTOWN\, where a song can change your fate. Winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards® including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album\, this acclaimed new show by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (NATASHA\, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812) is a love story for today… and always. \nHADESTOWN intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice\, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature\, doubt against faith\, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors\, dancers and singers\, HADESTOWN is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go. \nGet your tickets at https://www.asugammage.com
