SUMMARY:Breaking Ground Master Classes (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:Breaking Ground Master Classes\nBreaking Ground guest artists provide a series of master classes open to all Arizona dancers.  Join us for one or all master classes at ASU’s Nelson Fine Arts Building\, Room 122\, Tempe.  Check out www.conderdance.com for schedule\, teacher bios and class descriptions. \n9-10:30 am Michael Crotty\n10:30 am – noon Shelly Hawkins\nNoon-1:30 pm NobleMotionDance\n1:30-3 pm Suzanne Beahrs \n\n1 class for $10 | 3 classes for $25 | 4 classes for $35 | Cash or credit card accepted at the time of class \nMichael Crotty  ~ Opposing Points is an Advanced Technique class addressing the notions of opposition acting within and against the forces of the body.  This course draws upon sound anatomical principles to enable the dancers to call upon simple directional cues related to up/down\, forward/back and side/side. The result is a clarified approach to complex vocabulary that enables the body to move with ease and excitement. \nShelly Hawkins ~ With the dynamics of jazz dance and the weight and swing of modern dance\, we will discover powerful movement and hone our musicality. We will focus on pelvis driven movement that informs the spine and head. We will seek a sense of lift and freedom in the upper body while finding connectivity to the floor in the lower body\, and use rhythmic coordination to help dancers feel dynamics and suspension in their movement. We will move in and out of the floor\, use guided improvisations to open up our bodies and access hidden movement potential\, and make meaty movement phrases to sick beats. \nNobleMotionDance ~ This is an advanced level contemporary class that emphasizes aggressive full-bodied movement. Both athletic and sumptuous\, exercises delve into concepts of recycling energy\, transitional flow\, “use of weight”\, and dynamic range. The overall class encourages risk taking discovered through spatially challenging and complex phrase work.

SUMMARY:Camille A. Brown & Dancers\, Mr. TOL E. RAncE (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:Camille A Brown & Dancers\, Mr TOL E RAnce\n“Mr. TOL E. RAncE had it all – heart\, mind\, soul\, passion\, full-out dancing and introspective solos…Add high production values and a gifted cast\, who gave it their all\, and you have one heck of a show.”  THE HERALD SUN \nInspired by Mel Watkins’ book\, “On The Real Side: From Slavery to Chris Rock”\, Spike Lee’s controversial movie\, “Bamboozled”\, and Dave Chappelle’s “dancing vs. shuffling” analogy\,  this evening-length dance theater work celebrates African-American humor\, examines “the mask” of survival and the “double consciousness” (W.E.B. DuBois) of the black performer throughout history and the stereotypical role dominating current popular Black culture. \nThrough comedy\, animation\, theater\, soul-stirring live music by Scott Patterson and poignantly retrospective dance\, Mr. TOL E. RAncE speaks to the issue of tolerance – how much Black performers had to tolerate – and addresses the forms of modern-day minstrelsy we tolerate today. It is not a history lesson. Blending and contrasting the contemporary with the historic\, the goal of this personal work is to engage\, provoke\, and move the conversation of race forward in a timely dialogue about where we have been\, where we are and where might go. \nCentennial Hall\, 7:30 pm. SUMMARY:Aspen Santa Fe Ballet: An Evening with Pianist Joyce Yang (Scottsdale CPA)
DESCRIPTION:Aspen Santa Fe Ballet: An Evening with Pianist Joyce Yang\nScottsdale Center for the Performing Arts\nVirginia G. Piper Theater\nThe innovative Aspen Santa Fe Ballet presents a program devoted to contemporary dance works accompanied by pianist Joyce Yang. Devoted to curating new ballets\, the company has come to epitomize the contemporary-classical genre. The ballets for this program will be chosen from works set to music by Robert Schumann\, Leoš Janáček\, Philip Glass and Erik Satie. \nKorean-born pianist Joyce Yang won fame when she was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She has gone on to perform with major orchestras and received a Grammy nomination for her collaboration with violinist Augustin Hadelich on Works for Violin and Piano (2016). The Washington Post noted\, “Yang’s attention to detail and clarity is as impressive as her agility\, balance and velocity.”
