SUMMARY:ASU Dance presents Emerging Artists II: ENTROPY (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:Emerging Artists II: ENTROPY\n\nNovember 15-17\, 2024 \n\n7:30 p.m. Nov. 15-16\n2 p.m. Nov. 17 \nGalvin Playhouse Theatre 51 E. 10th St. Tempe AZ 85281 \n$10-$20 \n“The Dao gives birth to One. One gives birth to Two. Two give birth to Three. Three gives birth to all things.” –Chapter 42 of the Tao Te Ching \nENTROPY fuses the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism and Daoism\, posthumanism theory\, and feminist methodologies to explore humanity’s trajectories throughout history. By navigating primal life stages\, the quest for power\, and the dissolution of identity across cultures and time\, Entropy challenges fixed notions of humanity\, self\, gender\, and technology. It embodies both ancient traditions and posthuman anxieties\, questioning the boundaries of the human form and existence. The project critically engages with the intersection of spirituality\, technology\, and power\, while exploring impermanence\, the evolving relationship between humans and non-humans\, and the intersectionality of gender and power dynamics. \nEmerging Artists II: ENTROPY presents original choreographic and visual work by third-year MFA graduate student Valkyrie Yao. This showcase highlights interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects that weave together stage performance\, film and installation\, illuminated by philosophical and theoretical research. Over the course of nearly three years\, Valkyrie’s research has evolved through intensive exploration\, focusing on themes such as posthumanism\, identity\, and the intersection of spirituality\, technology and human consciousness. By transforming abstract inquiries from reality into artistic practice\, this project challenges traditional boundaries and encourages reflection on humanity’s role within a larger\, interconnected existence. \nContent transparency: This project includes both performing and visual arts. Performing arts works involve heavy subject matter with dark imagery and adult content. Visual arts works may invite viewer participation. Viewers will be asked to review and acknowledge the content reminder prior to attending. \nPlease note:  Viewers are invited to arrive 30 minutes before the concert starts to experience the visual arts exhibition in the theatre lobby. \nTickets must be purchased in advance at the Herberger Institute Box Office. There will be no in-person sales at the event. Guests who do not have a ticket at the door will be directed to purchase them online. \nNotice to Herberger Institute Faculty\, Staff\, Students and Mirabella Residents: \nEligible HIDA faculty\, staff and students may redeem their complimentary ticket(s) through the box office website. Students are eligible for one complimentary ticket; faculty and staff are eligible for two tickets. Click the ‘Buy Tickets’ button\, select the desired number of tickets\, then enter and apply your 10-digit ASU ID as the promo code at checkout. SUMMARY:Contra-Tiempo's ¡AZÚCAR! (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:ASU Gammage Beyond Series \n“¡azúcar!”\n\nNovember 16\, 2024\n\nContra-Tiempo’s ¡AZÚCAR! is a courageous naming/confrontation of an intentional obliteration of the undercurrent and often unspoken anti-Blackness in latinidad. Questions are continuing to drive the process as we begin to understand the complicated history of sugar and the messages from our ancestors. What does it feel like to individually and collectively heal\, what does it move like? 20 brilliant artists and collaborators take audiences through a journey of Celia Cruz’s vibrations\, unearthing history embedded in our bodies. Through ¡AZÚCAR!\, we explore ancestral wisdoms about a plant that once aided in our healing\, used as a way to sweeten medicinal concoctions\, now extracted\, refined and used as weaponized poison. This courageous work is rooted in and inspired by the sacred feminine\, personal narratives of food\, labor\, community\, sabor and explorations of ‘familying’ and healing as practices. \nMaster Artist and Afro-Cuban practitioner\, Kati Hernandez\, is a core collaborator and guest performer in the work.

SUMMARY:Arivaca Community Dance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance Community Workshops offer the opportunity for groups to experience the joy of movement in a nurturing and supportive environment that helps to unlock the creative mover/dancer in all of us. \nBased on the conviction that dance is a birthright\, community workshops start with three simple propositions: \n∙ We all have knowledge about how to move. \n∙ We all have stories to tell. \n∙ We all can learn from witnessing each other’s movements and listening to each other’s stories. \nDance brings together physical and mental energies in unique ways. It sparks fresh creativity for individuals and inspires new interactions within groups.  The use of playful improvisation &choreographic structures can culminate in a performance piece to share with the community and can also be a place to explore and have fun. \nTypical class activities include: warming up; learning basic movements; experimenting with improvisational structures; developing movement ideas; dancing alone and with others; writing and poetry; and exploring the relationship between movement\,words\, music\, and personal experience.
