SUMMARY:'No Frills' - A Dance Happenin' Tucson
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance presents the fall edition of its biannual No Frills Dance Happenin’. A variety of choreographers throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona come to share fresh and innovative works from various stages of the creative process. The works range from serious to silly and some are presented here for the first time. \n“The ‘No Frills’ concert has come to serve two important purposes\,” says ZUZI!’s Director\, Nanette Robinson. “It has become a popular venue for showcasing youth performers\, schools\, and youth choreography and it continues to be venue for local choreographers to take creative risks with new work.” The show has been described as an open mic for dance and is a unique opportunity to perform in a relaxed setting. As the name suggests\, there are no frills—no fancy lights\, no fancy sets—just dancers\, choreographers\, and experimentation. \nNo Frills Dance Happenin’ will highlight youth choreographers Friday night\, November 3rd\, at 7:30 PM\, and adult choreographers showcase Saturday\, November 4\, at 7:30 PM in the newly renovated Scoundrel & Scamp Theater at the Historic Y at 738 N. 5th Avenue in Tucson. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for youths under 18. For more information\, visit zuzimoveit.org or call 520-629-0237.

She was one of America’s first liberated women of color\, who fought against all odds for the sake of freedom and equality. This production brings light to the incredible accomplishments of Harriet Tubman\, the anti-slavery activist. \nDesert Dance Theatre’s artistic directors\, Marion Kirk Jones\, Renee Davis\, and Lisa R. Chow created Sister Moses\, along with music director\, John D. Anthony. The concept and much of the work was researched collaboratively with the help of Susan Smith\, director of String Sounds (quartet). The script is embellished with traditional spirituals\, slave songs and other music of that time around the Civil War Era. \nSince the production’s premiere at the Herberger Theater Center in January of 1993\, Sister Moses has been performed in various sold out venues throughout the Phoenix area including: Chandler Center for the Arts\, Gammage Auditorium\, Paradise Valley Community College\, Scottsdale Center for the Arts\, South Mountain Community College; and at several high schools. The company’s out of state performances include venues in Las Vegas\, Nevada and Austin\, Texas. Over 100\,000 audience members of all ages have enjoyed the experience of Sister Moses. \nThis powerful dance drama features Desert Dance Theatre with Renee Davis as Harriet Tubman\, dramatic narration by Renee Morgan Brooks\, African drumming and music direction by Step Raptis\, accompaniment by String Sounds and traditional spirituals sung by a choral ensemble featuring baritone soloist\, Greg Dansby. The unique blend of this 45-minute multidisciplinary presentation highlights the most important episodes of Harriet Tubman’s life. \nSister Moses is a valuable educational tool in bringing this period of American History alive. It shares the knowledge and experience of the struggles and accomplishments of Harriet Tubman that will bring a source of inspiration to students and adults alike. The program follows Tubman’s life as a young slave on a Southern Plantation\, her attempts to escape slavery\, her work on the Underground Railroad\, and her contributions to the Abolitionist movement. Slave songs from that period are featured for their significance as a means of passing information among the slaves. Hidden in the lyrics were vital escape details. \nFor more information\, contact Desert Dance Theatre at 480-962-4584 or gro.ertaehTecnaDtreseDnull@ofni or visit our website: www.DesertDanceTheatre.org. \n____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY:Scorpius' A VAMPIRE TALE Phoenix
DESCRIPTION:Scorpius Dance Theatre Presents the 14th Season of Annual Fall Haunt \nLisa Starry’s  “A Vampire Tale”\nDubbed “The ‘Nutcracker of Halloween\,” the yearly haunt is celebrating a return to its roots at the Phoenix Theatre’s Hardes Theatre\, the original birthplace of the production. A more intimate venue\, Hardes Theatre allows greater interaction with the audience and performers\, creating a more engaging experience. Additionally\, for the first time in A Vampire Tale’s history\, the vampires will rise from their coffins during the day with two special matinee shows. \nA Vampire Tale indulges audiences with all the trimmings: dark and sexy drama\, quirky and comedic episodes\, and visually stunning dance and aerial feats. This popular\, sell-out production pre-dates all of the vampire pop-culture and evolves annually to keep fans coming back for more. \nA Vampire Tale showcases 17 performers. Gavin Sisson and Nicole Olson return to the stage in there lead roles as the Vampire King and Queen. Martha Hernandez will return for the second year in the role of the Innocent. Also returning\, Louis Farber will play the side-splitting narrator role of Strange Man. Farber is a well-known Valley actor and director as well as the associate artistic director for Stray Cat Theatre. A Vampire Tale’s all-original soundtrack is composed by local musician Kristofer Hill. \nA Vampire Tale runs for two weekends: October 26 & 27 at 7:30 p.m.\, October 28 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.\, November 2 & 3 at 7:30 p.m. and November 4 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The show is held at Phoenix Theatre’s Hardes Theatre: 100 E. McDowell Rd\, Phoenix\, AZ\, 85004. SUMMARY:The Heart Opening Series: [nueBOX] Workshop Gina Jurek Mesa
DESCRIPTION:The Heart Opening Series: Deepening the Dance Experience Through Explorations in Vulnerability \n[nueBOX] Workshop w/ Gina Jurek \nSeptember 23\, 30 & October 7 ~ 3 Saturdays\, 1-2:30 pm\, $30 \nMesa Arts Center\, Acting Studio \nNo previous movement experience required \nVulnerability is the portal through which a meaningful reality is created. This 3-session workshop uses meditation\, language\, reflection\, and movement to guide dancers through personal explorations that aim to release blockages which keep us from accessing our own unique versions of deep\, meaningful\, dancing. Vulnerability expert Brene Brown says\, “vulnerability is about showing up and having the courage to be seen”\, so come and share yourself with us! \nGina Jurek is an emerging dance educator\, performer\, and choreographer in the Phoenix Valley. Freshly graduated from ASU with a BFA in Dance Performance\, she is eager to share and exchange with local dancers who share her passions for movement and personal introspection. \n

SUMMARY:PHILADANCO and Rennie Harris Puremovement - A creative fusion of ballet and hip-hop Tucson
DESCRIPTION:Student tickets start at $20 and are available at Centennial Hall box office or online. \n“Straight Outta Philly”In this unique presentation\, two of Philadelphia’s greatest dance institutions will meet on stage in a fusion of hip-hop and ballet. \nAcross the nation and around the world\, PHILADANCO is celebrated for its innovation\, creativity and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance.  Founded by Joan Myers Brown in 1970\, the group has a legacy of breaking barriers and building bridges across cultural divides. \nIn a society where hip-hop is often portrayed as a violent\, undisciplined counterculture\, RENNIE HARRIS PURE MOVEMENT deconstructs popular perception of this medium\, expanding and challenging the boundaries and definitions of hip-hop in general. As hip-hop continues to be chosen as the modern generation’s medium of expression\, RHPM works to honor its history\, explore its ideas\, and further its contributions to the surrounding community. \nHarris\, a North Philadelphia native\, founded RHPM based on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation\, with the unique ability to express universal themes that extend beyond racial\, religious\, and economic boundaries. \nwww.rhpm.org \nwww.philadanco.org
