DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1971 by Artistic Director Brenda Way\, who trained under the legendary George Balanchine\, ODC (Oberlin Dance Collective—named after Oberlin College in Ohio) loaded up a yellow school bus and relocated to San Francisco in 1976. Her goal was to ground the company in a dynamic\, pluralistic urban setting. ODC was one of the first American companies to return\, after a decade of pedestrian exploration\, to virtuosic technique in contemporary dance and to commit major resources to interdisciplinary collaboration and musical commissions for the repertory.  \nODC/Dance Company consists of ten world-class dancers and performs its imaginative repertory for more than 50\,000 people annually. In addition to two annual home seasons in San Francisco\, recent highlights include appearances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival in New York\, MODAFE Festival in Seoul Korea\, Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley\, and past standing-room-only engagements in Europe\, Russia\, and Asia. Way’s work was selected by Brooklyn Academy of Music for the Inaugural Dancemotion Tour in 2010. \nThe company has been widely recognized for its rigorous technique and for its numerous groundbreaking collaborations with composers Marcelo Zarvos\, Bobby McFerrin\, Zoë Keating\, Zap Mama\, Pamela Z\, and Paul Dresher; writer/singer Rinde Eckert; actors Bill Irwin\, Geoff Hoyle and Robin Williams; visual artists Andy Goldsworthy\, Wayne Thiebaud\, Jim Campbell\, and Eleanor Coppola; and welder/bike designer Max Chen.

The use of playful and deep imagery and improvisation is incorporated and the classes build on each other. \nYour commitment to the series is a large part of the experience. \nSRT reveals the natural grace in every human being and taps into transforming states of  consciousness which awakens the Dance within and guides us in the practice of letting go; letting go of stress\, letting go of unnecessary holding in our body\, letting go of preconceptions about what is supposed to happen\, letting go of fear of awkwardness\, letting go of the belief that we somehow don’t have the “right body”. \nTactile exercises are used to give the imagery immediate physical effect in the movements of participants. \nTwo class sessions will be offered on Friday evenings from 4:30-6pm and Saturday mornings from 10-11:30am at the sYnapse at Studio Y. SUMMARY:Skinner Releasing Workshop (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:Men and women of all ages (professional dancers\, mature movers\, inexperienced dancers\, and folks that love to move in a meditative and spontaneous way) are invited to participate in this class. The use of playful and deep imagery and improvisation is incorporated and the classes build on each other. \nYour commitment to the series is a large part of the experience. \nSRT reveals the natural grace in every human being and taps into transforming states of  consciousness which awakens the Dance within and guides us in the practice of letting go; letting go of stress\, letting go of unnecessary holding in our body\, letting go of preconceptions about what is supposed to happen\, letting go of fear of awkwardness\, letting go of the belief that we somehow don’t have the “right body”. \nTactile exercises are used to give the imagery immediate physical effect in the movements of participants. \nTwo class sessions will be offered on Friday evenings from 4:30-6pm and Saturday mornings from 10-11:30am at the sYnapse at Studio Y. Session 1: January 10-February 1. Session 2: February 7-28. $120 per session or $220 for all 8 weeks.

DESCRIPTION:This open level class explores modern and postmodern dance in a fun and inviting environment. Drawing from release technique\, floorwork and contemporary dance\, the class offers a dynamic exploration of movement and musicality allowing for personal growth and artistic exploration. Appropriate for movers with some dance experience to more advanced movers\, the class can be modified to your level of dancing. \nClasses run Mondays from 4-5pm at the sYnapse at Studio Y. January 6-April 28\, no class on March 31. Suggested donation: $10. No one will be denied participation due to lack of funds.
