In this workshop designed for emerging artists\, you will get a glimpse into Gibney Company’s ethos and daily practices starting with a class that will prepare you to take on the choreography of world-renowned artists such as Johan Inger\, Sonya Tayeh\, and Yue Yin.  \nRecommended for advanced dancers. Limited availability.  \nGibney Company\, led by Artistic Director Gina Gibney and Director Gilbert T Small II\, commissions and performs works by renowned and rising international choreographers who are committed to exploring connections between the rigorous physicality of contemporary dance alongside responsive\, humanistic storytelling. Presenting a broad range of aesthetics and techniques\, Gibney Company has an unrelenting focus on artistic excellence and social integrity.  \nIn January 2020\, Gibney received a generous lead gift to support the transformation of its professional dance company. In the 2020–21 season\, the company doubled in size and made its debut at The Joyce Theater. The company recently performed as part of New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival in 2022 and is in the midst of its first national tour to nine cities across the country. Since its expansion\, the company has commissioned eight new works from a wide range of choreographers\, including Rena Butler\, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano\, Sonya Tayeh\, and Yue Yin\, and performed acclaimed repertory Johan Inger and Ohad Naharin.  \nGibney Company’s model for a 21st century dance company supports sustainable careers for dancers and healthy working relationships for artists and collaborators. DESCRIPTION:All levels are welcome.  For those students with aerial experience\, this class offers the next step to advancing their skills.  This course will concentrate on the importance of fluidity while dancing on the trapeze as well as how to incorporate dance on the floor.  In addition to learning aerial skills\, students work on building spatial awareness\, trust & cooperation. DESCRIPTION:MANA WAHINE (Powerful Woman) bursts upon the stage in a multi-media collage of powerful imagery and dance in this work from Ōkāreka Dance Company. Inspired by the historic true story of a young Maori heroine and informed by women’s stories from the dancers’ families\, the work incorporates bold projections\, chant\, original music\, traditional implements\, and costuming that draws from Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand) cultural traditions and history. \nThe courage\, determination and fearlessness of the heroine fuels the choreographic style explored in this vibrant piece\, and the stories of the dancers’ matrilineal ancestors help create a thoroughly contemporary work\, infused with traditional and historical motifs\, that celebrates female endurance and strength. This performance is a part of the ASU Gammage BEYOND series which includes an After Party with food\, drinks and a special Q&A with the artists.

DESCRIPTION:All levels are welcome.  For those students with aerial experience\, this class offers the next step to advancing their skills.  This course will concentrate on the importance of fluidity while dancing on the trapeze as well as how to incorporate dance on the floor.  In addition to learning aerial skills\, students work on building spatial awareness\, trust & cooperation.
