SUMMARY:Lucid Movement Series (Tucson)
DESCRIPTION:This class series will consist of 4 weekends in the practice of listening\, moving alone and together through kinesthetic awareness\, growth\, connection\, and renewal through movement. \nMen and women of all ages (professional dancers\, mature movers\, inexperienced dancers\, and folks that love to move in a meditative and spontaneous way) are invited to participate in this class. The use of playful and deep imagery and improvisation is incorporated and the classes build on each other. \nSRT reveals the natural grace in every human being and taps into transforming states of  consciousness which awakens the Dance within and guides us in the practice of letting go; letting go of stress\, letting go of unnecessary holding in our body\, letting go of preconceptions about what is supposed to happen\, letting go of fear of awkwardness\, letting go of the belief that we somehow don’t have the “right body”. \nSaturdays from 10:30-11:30am running October 5-November 2 at The sYnapse at Studio Y. $60 for all 4 classes in the series.

SUMMARY:TCA Presents: MOMIX/ALICE (Tempe)
DESCRIPTION:Travel down the rabbit hole MOMIX-style with Moses Pendleton’s newest creation\, ALICE\, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. As Alice’s body grows and shrinks and grows again\, Pendleton’s dancers extend themselves by means of props\, ropes\, and other dancers. \n“I don’t intend to retell the whole Alice story” he says\, “but to use it as a taking off point for invention. I’m curious to see what will emerge\, and I’m getting curiouser and curiouser the more I learn about Lewis Carroll\, who like me was a devoted photographer.” \nThe Alice story is full of imagery and absurd logic – before there was surrealism there was Alice. Alice is an invitation to invent\, to let imagination run and play outside. “Ask Alice\,” sang Grace Slick in “White Rabbit” – she also said “feed your head.” \nPendleton continues\, “You can see why I think Alice is a natural fit for MOMIX and an opportunity for us to extend our reach. I want to take this show into places we haven’t been before in terms of the fusion of dancing\, lighting\, music\, costumes\, and projected imagery.” As with every MOMIX production\, you never quite know what you are going to get. Audiences will be taken on a journey that is both magical\, mysterious\, fun\, eccentric\, and much more. As Alice falls down the rabbit hole and experiences every kind of transformation\, so will you.

This unique setting will give audiences a taste of what is happening in Arizona’s dance scene. It is a perfect platform for dance companies to get exposure\, promote their work\, and to connect with others in the dance community and the general public. Each evening performance will showcase different dance artists including emerging artists as well as professional companies from all genres and styles of dance. \nThis year’s festival will feature special guest dance artist\, Christina Johnson\, a founding member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet and former principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem. Christina will perform a premiere solo as part of a new dance ensemble\, “Absoluta” under the direction of visionary and award-winning choreographer\, Anandha Ray. \nA post-performance “Q & A” will be facilitated by the Arizona Dance Coalition directly after the show. This unique setting will give audiences a taste of what is happening in Arizona’s dance scene. It is a perfect platform for dance companies to get exposure\, promote their work\, and to connect with others in the dance community and the general public. Each evening performance will showcase different dance artists including emerging artists as well as professional companies from all genres and styles of dance. \nThis year’s festival will feature special guest dance artist\, Christina Johnson\, a founding member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet and former principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem. Christina will perform a premiere solo as part of a new dance ensemble\, “Absoluta” under the direction of visionary and award-winning choreographer\, Anandha Ray. \nA post-performance “Q & A” will be facilitated by the Arizona Dance Coalition directly after the show. The “Q & A” will allow the audience to engage in lively conversation with the artistic directors and choreographers for insights in the creation of their dance works. \nArizona Dance Festival Master Classes will be offered before and during the week of the show.
