SUMMARY:RE:volve
DESCRIPTION:[nueBOX] will be hosting RE:volve (formerly known as Experimental Art Night)\, a free evening of performances on October 20 at 7PM in the Acting Studio at Mesa Arts Center. The show will be filled with diverse and exploratory works from local artists Steven Redondo\, Gina Jurek\, Rain Locker\, and ASU Dancers. \nSteven Redondo is no stranger to RE:volve. He created and performed three solo pieces at RE:volve in a series of work titled “one” “two”\, and “three”. Each piece  explored the relationship of artist and audience. This time he is bringing us “FOUR” which was created in reaction and relation to sound. Gina Jurek is a Phoenix based dance artist and musician that investigates the exchange between material and spiritual realms-specifically at the intersection of identity. Her most recent work titled “Thru” explores dis-identifying with the body so as to make oneself a conduit to be directed and moved by Spirit energy. Also sharing work at at this event is Rain Locker. \n  \nASU Dance Composition students lead by faculty and choreographer\, Carley Conder\, will have three pieces being presented. Student works will include “In the Jungle”\, a work inspired by a Henri Rousseau painting\, “How far” which explores the idea of sacrifice in four separate and distinct parts\, and “Chan(g/c)e” which exhibits the reality of chance and change. \nRE:volve is a platform designed for established and up-and-coming performance artists alike. It provides a space for artists to share completed pieces\, performance experiments\, and works-in-progress while offering mentorship\, resources\, technical support\, marketing\, documentation\, and so much more. All are welcome and encouraged to partake in the creative process of these individuals. \nFor performance artists interested in showing work at the next RE:volve\, registration can be found online at: www.nuebox.org/revolve

SUMMARY:UA Presents Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis 'Spaces' | Lil Buck & Jared Grimes
DESCRIPTION:“The duo evoked not only how animals move but how they interact\, most strikingly in the finale\, “Bees Bees Bees\,” in which their fleet\, floor-skimming steps and the orchestra’s exuberant buzzing worked together like one great colony.”  NEW YORK TIMES \nWynton Marsalis’ Spaces combines modern dance with big band jazz in a playful and wildly entertaining exploration of the animal kingdom. Performed for the first time (to sold-out crowds) in 2016\, Wynton Marsalis’ new dance suite for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is visually captivating. Marsalis and the orchestra are joined by the Astaire Award winning tapper Jared Grimes and the ground breaking ‘jooker’ Lil Buck\, leaping\, sliding\, flipping\, and tap dancing across the stage. Each of Spaces’ ten movements corresponds to a different animal\, from “King Lion” to “Bees\, Bees\, Bees\,” offering a dazzling array of sights and sounds that express the diversity\, humor\, and quirky majesty found in nature. The same two singular dance geniuses from the Spaces premiere—Lil Buck and Jared Grimes—reprise their roles\, leaping\, sliding\, flipping\, and tap dancing across the stage. \nLil Buck is a groundbreaking young dancer who has performed with Yo-Yo Ma\, Madonna\, the New York City Ballet\, and Cirque du Soleil. Jared Grimes is a versatile tap dancer who has won the Astaire Award\, choreographed for multiple Broadway shows and Cirque Du Soleil\, and performed internationally with artists ranging from Wynton Marsalis and Gregory Hines to Mariah Carey and The Roots. \nDamian Woetzel\, choreographer and retired Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet\, returns as director and choreographic consultant\, seamlessly integrating the dance with Marsalis’ musical compositions. Spaces is a one-of-a-kind collaboration that is both an ode to the glory of nature and an extraordinary display of human achievement. \nArtist Video Spaces \nLil Buck & Jared Grimes interpret animal movements in JALCO’s Spaces. \n  \n3 ways to purchase TICKETS\n1.  Tickets ONLINE AT  https://oss.ticketmaster.com/aps/uapresents/EN/buy/browse\n2.  Tickets by Phone  Call the Centennial Hall Box Office # 520-621-3341\n3.  Tickets in Person at Centennial Hall\, 1020 E. SUMMARY:ASU Gammage presents Ronald K. Brown EVIDENCE\, A Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:ASU Gammage presents Ronald K. Brown EVIDENCE\, A Dance Company \nFounded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn\, Evidence\, A Dance Company focuses on the seamless integration of traditional African dance with contemporary choreography. Through its vibrant and soulful dance works\, Evidence provides a unique view of human struggles\, tragedies\, and triumphs. Known for his musicality and brilliant use of stage space Brown’s movement reinforces the importance of community in African American culture. His work acquaints audiences with his kinetic storytelling style through movement with a message that showcases the beauty of contemporary dance blended with traditional African forms and rhythms. He is an advocate for the growth of the African American dance community and is instrumental in encouraging young dancers to choreograph and to develop careers in dance. \nProgram includes:\nNew Conversations: Iron Meets Water\nCome Ye\nOder My Steps \nNEW CONVERSATIONS: IRON MEETS WATER (2018)\nWith an original score by Afro Latin Jazz composer\, Arturo O’Farrill\, the newest addition to the EVIDENCE\, A Dance Company repertory looks at the invaluable guidance and healing that female ancestors provide. In Iron Meets Water\, Ron and Arturo explore Afro-Cuban elements in each other’s work\, and what can be learned from Oxossi – the Orisha of hunting and justice\, seen in the male/female form. Arturo has created a score that “responds to the tension\, agitation and liberation that can be found in the dancers’ movement.” Ron is excited to explore the Afro-Cuban and spiritual elements he feels in Arturo’s original composition. Their work together is sure to captivate dance and music lovers everywhere. \nCOME YE (2003)\nCome Ye is a call to all those living in fear\, all those willing to fight for their lives\, and ultimately\, for peace. This multimedia work utilizes Mr. Brown’s signature style of kinetic storytelling through African\, Caribbean\, modern\, ballet and social dance styles to summon warriors\, angels and activists dedicated to the pursuit of liberation and peace amidst the struggles of human conflict. This work includes music by Nina Simone (“Come Ye\,” “Sunday in Savannah\,” and “Revolution”) and Fela Kuti (“Kalakuta” and “Coffin for Head of State”) and a video collage by Robert Penn. \nORDER MY STEPS (2005)\nOrder My Steps takes its title from Psalms 119 and explores ideas behind the scripture and seeing one’s life as a path. What is our direction? Is it correct and how do we deter-mine that? This contemporary dance is used as a vehicle to investigate the sense of purpose and obedience that comes into play when one recognizes “a calling.” Thematically\, most of Evidence’s work presents a universal perspective that connects to more than one spiritual practice or ideology. Conversely\, Order My Steps is fueled by a specific inspirational text. Narration by Chadwick Boseman is included as well as music by Fred Hammond (“Success Is In Your Hands”)\, Terry Riley (“Echoes of Primordial Time” and “Mongolian Winds\,” performed by Kronos Quartet) and Bob Marley (“War/No More Trouble” and “Exodus”).
