SUMMARY:IN MOTION: Chandler-Gilbert CC Dance Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Chandler-Gilbert Community College presents IN MOTION: Student Dance Showcase. Students have an opportunity to present their own choreographic work in two main stage productions each year. These students range from dance majors\, dance enthusiasts\, and returning professionals. Each student is free to explore movement that inspires them as an artist. Students receive intent-based constructive feedback from faculty and peers. CGCC has a unique ability to mentor future dance artists with its newly remodeled 39\,000 square foot music and dance rehearsal space.  The new space showcases two new dance rooms.  The larger space totals 2\,442 square feet for technique classes and larger ensemble rehearsals.  The second studio space at 982 square feet allows students and faculty additional rehearsal space\, making CGCC’s dance program unique to dance artists in the east valley.  Come and enjoy an evening of dance highlighting students’ efforts at CGCC this spring. \nCGCC offers a two-year degree in dance\, AAFA-Dance.  The program focuses on dance as an art form with particular attention to dance theory and its relationship to the development of good technical skills. \n$5/$7 Box Office:  480.732.7343 \nOn-line Tickets:  https://www.cgc.maricopa.edu/performingarts/Pages/default.aspx

SUMMARY:Scorpius' ANIMAL\, PHX
DESCRIPTION:Scorpius Dance Theatre presents ANIMAL\, hosted by Lost Our Home Pet Foundation. An original show created by Scorpius’ Director\, Lisa Starry\, it is inspired by her love of animals and passion for their well-being. The show explores the relationship we have with animals\, as well as their social interactions\, physicality and movement. Overall\, a lighthearted and entertaining show\, Starry is also taking the opportunity to provide awareness and support for animals in our community and globally. A portion of ticket sales will benefit local animal charity\, Lost Our Home Pet Rescue. \nAccording to Starry\, “Last year\, when I created LOVE\, I had intended on incorporating animals into the production in some capacity. I soon realized that I could devote an entire production to this subject. I’ve been an active supporter of the fostering and adoption of animals\, as well as global organizations working to end animal abuse. My hope is that audiences will be fascinated\, entertained and enlightened by ANIMAL.” \nANIMAL will feature nine different dance works\, comedic interludes\, plus two short films. From the unusual mating ritual of the praying mantis\, the slumbering ways of the sloth\, the slinky movement of snakes\, to the social interactions of dogs\, Scorpius’ dancers will use their athleticism\, grace\, and acting abilities to emulate the motion and behaviors of various domestic animals and wild creatures. \nA heartwarming display of our love for animals\, one short film will feature owners interacting with their pets and the special bonds they share. A more serious film\, coupled with live dance\, will bring to light the emotional distress of caged and confined animals. Attendees of ANIMAL will also be treated to a visual arts display in the lobby\, featuring original animal paintings and drawings by students of Metropolitan Arts Institute. Lost our Home Pet Rescue will also be on hand to provide information about supporting the organization. \nFor every ticket sold ($25 plus surcharge)\, Scorpius will donate $1 to help support Lost Our Home Pet Rescue. 602-254-2151\,  https://www.scorpiusdance.com/tickets

Ask someone to dance and form long lines. The lines are arranged so that you have your partner opposite you and your “neighbors” on either side of you. The caller will then walk everyone through some simple moves. Couples advance up or down the line so that you get new neighbors to dance with. Allemande\, do-see-do\, gypsy\, circle\, star\, ladies’ chain\, hey\, swing – there aren’t many moves to learn – this is a dance form from which you can get full pleasure the very first time that you do it. \n

SUMMARY:ZUZI! Dance Frida Kahlo: Blood and Gold\, Tucson Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Tucson Botanical Gardens exhibit of Frida Kahlo: Art Garden\, Life\, and the final Frida Al Fresco Friday\, ZUZI! Dance celebrates the life of Frida Kahlo Mexican artist\, with choreography by ZUZI! cofounder\, Nanette Robinson. This concert travels through Frida Kahlo’s richly diverse and controversial life with dance\, visual arts\, spoken word and live music. \nFrida Kahlo: Blood and Gold “Broken Column” Photo by Tala \nFeatured dancers and musicians:\nAarlin Murrieta Acuna\, Sabrina Geoffrion\, Bethanne Griffin\, Karenne Koo\, Sherry Mulholland\, Aja Squires and Cynthia Wasco\, and Nanette Robinson. The musical performers feature Pablo Peregrina\, Sally Withers and Paul Docker. \nFrida Kahlo de Rivera: \n(July 6\, 1907 – July 13\, 1954) Kahlo’s life began and ended in Mexico City\, in her home known as the Blue House. At the age of six\, Frida developed polio.  At the age of 18 she suffered a traumatic trolley car accident that changed the course of her life forever. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition\, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.  Her work has also been described by André Breton\, principal initiator of the surrealist movement\, as “a ribbon around a bomb.” \n“Frida’s legacy\, besides the legacy for painters\, I think for people in general… she has been this example of strength and her story is a strength-giving story. People… get from her this idea that you can just keep struggling and keep working and deal with adversity and keep on going and come up with something that makes life\, a whole life\, seem worthwhile.”\n~Frida Kahlo biographer Hayden Herrera in a PBS interview with filmmaker Amy Stechler \nAbout ZUZI!:\nZUZI! Dance is a non-profit arts service organization committed to catalyzing personal expression and healing for people of all backgrounds\, ages\, and abilities. Through movement-based art forms and somatic practices\, ZUZI! Dance provides opportunities and resources for individuals to discover and confidently navigate their creative paths. We offer classes\, workshops\, and performances for our community to fully experience live art. ZUZI! is a part of the Historic YWCA\, which is a center for the arts\, education and the environment. \nThe evening will culminate with a raffle of fabulous gifts donated by local Southern Arizona businesses and artists\, such as Yike’s Toy Store\, Arts for All\, and Lotus Massage. All proceeds go to the ZUZI! dancers & musicians honorariums. \nMusicians Pablo Peregrina and Sally Withers Frida Kahlo: Blood and Gold at Tucson Botanical Gardens October 2016 Photo by Tala

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Dance Concert Tucson
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance presents Summer Solstice: A Dance Concert \n“This is the time of the rose\, blossom and thorn\, fragrance and blood. Now on this longest day\, light triumphs\, and yet begins the decline into the dark. The Sun King grown embraces the Queen of Summer in the love that is death because it is so complete that all dissolves into the single song of ecstasy that moves the worlds. So the Lord of Light dies to Himself\, and sets sail across the dark seas of time\, searching for the isle of light that is rebirth. We turn the Wheel and share his fate\, for we have planted the seeds of our own changes and to grow we must accept even the passing of the sun.” (The Spiral Dance\, HarperCollins\, 1999\, p. 205) \nSpecial Guest Choreographers –\nChaos Theory Dance: \nChaos Theory Dance\, a “quick-come-pick-me-up” company directed by Billbob Brown since 1999\, takes its name from the science of complexity\, which finds meaningful patterns in apparently unpredictable systems\, such as weather\, clouds\, traffic\, populations\, and relationships. Through improvisation and set choreography\, interactions with musicians\, video\, cartoons\, or dialogue\, and with a lot of zaniness\, CTD makes work that is fun and emotionally accessible\, letting audiences “ooh” and “ahh” while being intellectually challenged. The company has performed at Jacob’s Pillow\, and in colleges and theaters across the country\, including Harvard\, Roger Williams University\, and MIT. Recent projects have been with Kristen Miller\, cellist\, who was named 2004 Female Artist of the Year by Jam Magazine; DuoJalal; Stephen Katz\, and other musicians. Previously based in Massachusetts\, the company is now re-established in Tucson\, Arizona. \n \nMAC & Company:\nMAC & Company is a Phoenix based 501(c)3 non-profit modern dance company founded from a shared passion for dance education and performance between Micaela Church and Li Pei Khoo in 2014. They are bringing five new works to the Summer Solstice ranging from the fast and fiery to dark and solemn. MAC & Company brings there unique style and choreographic view in each work. \n \nZUZI! Dance:\nAarlin Murrieta – Full-time Pima Community College undergrad\, Aarlin Murrieta was born in Hermosillo\, Sonora; she is 19 years of age and has been dancing since she was 12. Aarlin has danced with ZUZI! for over a year now and is excited to be branching out with her dance styles while at ZUZI!. Aarlin also delves into drawing and painting and often uses both along with dancing as complimentary forms of art. \n \nMaddie Brown – A 17 year old senior at Salpointe Catholic High School. She has been dancing at Zuzi for 10 years and is in training to teach trapeze. Maddie has been dancing for Salpointe as well as Zuzi and loves both\, but trapeze is her passion. Her family has been very supportive and has helped her passion for the arts grow. \n \nNanette Robinson – A choreographer\, educator and dancer\, ZUZI! Co-Founder and Director of Arts Education\, holds a BFA in Dance from Temple University and is an introductory and ongoing certified instructor of Skinner Releasing. She has travelled internationally teaching and performing and has extensive experience as an aerial dancer and teacher having worked with Robert Davidson and Terry Sendgraff. Nanette’s choreography has been showcased locally with O-T-O\, Zenith Dance Collective\, Arts for All\, University of Arizona Dance Department\, Rick Wamer\, “Mythos” Project\, NEW ARTiculations\, Funhouse Movement Theater\, The Tucson Poetry Festival\,Ballet Rincon\, the ADAA Showcase and the Flagstaff Summer Dance Festival. Nanette is currently teaching at Paolo Freire School\, with Mirasol Recovery Treatment Program and ZUZI! School. She is thrilled to be a part of ZUZI!. It has been her home and artistic toolbox for creating dances\, flying\, teaching and working with all levels and ages of dance lovers. For more information visit nanutdancer.com \n \nMirela Roza and Dancers:\nMirela Roza was born in Fortaleza Brazil where she received most of her dance training with Tatiana Leskova from the Original Ballets Russe. She performed with Ballet Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro under the direction of Jean-Ives Lormeau. Mirela received her intensive education at The University of Arizona earning a B.F.A in Dance and a B.A. in Psychology. In May 2015 she received her Masters degree of Fine Arts in Performance and Choreography at The University of Arizona. She is currently employed as Adjunct Faculty at Pima Community College and in her short time there she has found that her background in education\, performance\, and choreography has helped her contribute to the activities and culture of the department. \n \nFunhouse Movement Theater:\nArtistic Director: Sherry Mulholland\nOur mission is to create quality dance programs\, to provide dance education opportunities to the public including our award-winning Youth Outreach Program\, to encourage collaboration within the dance community\, and to speak of the importance of the arts in our lives.\n \nLee Anne Hartley– steps back into her role as theforemost choreographer for Funhouse.
