SUMMARY:BODYTRAFFIC (Scottsdale)
DESCRIPTION:BODYTRAFFIC uses the creative spirit of its Los Angeles home to fulfill its mission of delivering performances that inspire audiences simply to love dance. Since its inception in 2007\, the company has held its place at the forefront of the concert dance world with a compelling style that “suggests invention\, attitude\, and urban edge” (The Boston Globe). Widely acclaimed for its “peerless dancers” who “can do it all from hip-hop to ballet” (LA Dance Chronicle)\, the company is composed of artists who received their training at some of the finest schools throughout the world\, and its smashing repertory includes the works of renowned contemporary choreographers like Kyle Abraham\, Ohad Naharin\, Hofesh Shechter\, Victor Quijada\, Arthur Pita\, Fernando Magadan\, and Micaela Taylor. This combination of superb dancers and accomplished choreographers led the Los Angeles Times to describe BODYTRAFFIC as “one of the most talked about companies—not just in LA\, but nationwide.”  \nThe company’s trajectory from Los Angeles to nationwide recognition is notable in its 2016 Hollywood Bowl debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and in its current company-in-residence status at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. Beyond Los Angeles\, the company has captured the attention of major presenters at prestigious venues throughout the United States. During the 2017–18 season\, BODYTRAFFIC celebrated its 10th anniversary with an extensive tour to more than 20 international cities\, including Moscow and St. Petersburg for the CONTEXT Diana Vishneva Festival and The Hague for The Holland Dance Festival.  \nOne of the company’s greatest accomplishments occurred in 2015 when the Obama administration selected it to be U.S. cultural ambassadors to Israel and Jordan through DanceMotion USA\, a State Department program that sought to engage international audiences through educational opportunities\, cultural exchange\, and performance. BODYTRAFFIC also served as cultural ambassadors of the United States in South Korea (2016)\, Algeria (2017–18)\, and Indonesia (2018).

SUMMARY:"A Visit to Mother Winter": A Winter Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:ZUZI! Dance Solstice Celebration \n“A Visit to Mother Winter”\n“…The well disappeared\, and they were standing in the middle of a broad field of silvery snow. There was no sign of either sun or moon\, but the sky above seemed to glow with a silvery light\, and in the distance there was a grove of trees with white bark that seemed to shine from within…” – excerpt from “A Visit to Mother Winter” adapted tale by Starhawk. \nAs the shortest day of the year\, the winter Solstice marks the turning from the cold\, dark days of winter to the warmer\, lighter days of spring and summer. Historically\, this season is a time of reflection\, renewal\, and community celebration. With each Solstice celebration we envision honoring the interconnectedness of our humanity as we move forward to grow\, evolve\, and change with the return of the sun. This year’s winter theme reflects on past lessons and the gifts we share through the journey of life.  Join us for a magical adventure that inspires the lessons which transcend age and gender.  This celebration begins on Wednesday\, December 21st at 8pm at Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre located in the Historic Y at 738 N 5th Ave. \nThe Solstice Celebration show combines the art of narrated storytelling with the visual component of dance to bring a festive and unique holiday tale to life on the stage. This show is the culmination for ZUZI! Dance’s community workshop and youth aerial workshops hosted this fall in preparation for this performance. Both groups will bring their talents to the stage in vital story roles. ZUZI! Dance will feature choreography by ZUZI! dancers Maddie Brown\, Aja Squires and Cofounder Nanette Robinson. Beginning with the Lindy Hop which was created and developed by the Black community in Harlem during the jazz age and going though decades of dance that coincided with transformative history through the 1930s\, 40s\, 50s and 60s in the United States and around the world. Specifically\, Steve will share the story of Wu\, a refugee from Vietnam who transformed her own life by learning how to ballroom dance. \nDance Class: Learn to Swing Dance\nJoin Steve Conrad of the Arizona Lindy Hop Society for a fun swing dance lesson. Swing dancing is a partner dance that originated in Harlem\, NY in the late 1920s and spread across the country and the world in the 1930s and 40s. It is enjoyed today all over the world by dancers of all ages and backgrounds. No partner needed. \nBio: Steve Conrad is the founder and director of the Arizona Lindy Hop Society which focuses on preserving and sharing American born dances from the jazz and rock and early roll eras of the 1920s through the early 1960s. He has been teaching Lindy Hop and swing dancing for more than 26 years and has traveled around the world teaching with tours across the US\, Europe\, and China. His first Lindy Hop teacher was the legendary Frankie Manning and Steve produced the Arizona Swing Jam workshop with Frankie in AZ for 14 years until Frankie’s passing at age 94. Steve was featured on ABC’s “The Bachelorette\,” HGTV’s “House Hunters\,” Arizona Highways TV\, and NBC’s “Little Big Shots: Forever Young.” Steve is also a certified ballroom dance teacher for Dancing Classrooms and was trained in New York by ballroom dance champion\, Pierre Dulaine\, who has been the subject of several films including “Mad Hot Ballroom\,” “Take the Lead\,” and “Dancing in Jaffa\,” all which address the transformative power of dance. Steve helped lead a pilot program for teaching ballroom dance to people experiencing homelessness at the Human Services Campus in Phoenix and has used dance as a healing modality for children in the foster care system by teaching for Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona. Steve was the director of the Ballroom dance program at Mesa Community College and is often a guest teacher at Scottsdale Community College and Xavier College Prep.  \n  \nDavid Olarte\, Founder and Co-director of Stilo Dance  \nPresentation: Social Performance: Strategies Towards Cultural Immersion and Interconnectivity \nDavid’s presentation highlights social dance as a strategy towards cultural immersion and community interconnectivity. As the social fabric continues to be shaped by the participation of inter-generational identities\, David shares insight on the short and long term approach towards inclusive programming and re-imagining\nboth learning and performance spaces.  \nDance Class: Rhythmic Narratives in Afro-Latin Dance \nThis workshop will look at Afro-Latin rhythm and musicality\, specifically connecting clave with Afro-Latin movement. Connecting key patterns from the ground up provides a framework for engaging the roots and corporeal expressivity in Afro-Latin Social dance. \nBio: David Olarte (MFA\, MA) is an Afro-Latinx dancer (salsa\, mambo\, and contemporary couple dance) with over 20 years of choreography\, performance\, and instruction. SUMMARY:Ballet Arizona presents Giselle (Phoenix)
DESCRIPTION:Ballet Arizona presents Giselle\nThis ghost-filled\, haunting masterpiece is one of the most beloved and romantic ballets of all time. Giselle tells the tragic yet passionate tale of a lovely young woman who dies of a broken heart. The ballet is famous for the Wilis\, maiden spirits who take revenge on the young nobleman that betrayed Giselle. Achingly beautiful\, Giselle is an enrapturing work of art that draws audiences in with themes of enduring love\, tragedy and romance. \nBallet Arizona dancers in Giselle\, photo by Tim Fuller.

SUMMARY:Ballet Tucson presents Winter Concert
DESCRIPTION:WINTER CONCERT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 17-19\, 2023\nLeo Rich Theater\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nALLEGRO BRILLANTE\nBALLET TUCSON PREMIERE\nChoreography by George Balanchine\nMusic by Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky \nSet to Tschaikovsky’s beautiful Third Piano Concerto\, Allegro Brillante is characterized by what Maria Tallchief (the ballerina on whom the bravura leading role was created) calls “an expansive Russian romanticism.” The music’s vigorous pace makes the steps appear even more difficult\, but the ballet relies on strong dancing\, precise timing\, and breadth of gesture. \nBalanchine said\, “It contains everything I know about the classical ballet in 13 minutes.” \nPresented with permission by the George Balanchine Trust. \nBORDERLAND\nBALLET TUCSON PREMIERE\nChoreography by Price Suddarth\nMusic by Johann Sebastian Bach \nBorderland is the state of being where the mind is caught between two realms– awake and asleep. The ballet opens on four dancers\, as if from a dream\, emerging out of the darkness. In following the unpredictable path of a dream\, they travel back and forth between hauntingly silent tranquility and explosively manic tension. The work invites the viewer to remove themselves from the predictable and immerse themselves instead into this rapidly changing experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHIMIKO\nWORLD PREMIERE\nChoreography by Chieko Imada\nMusic by Yusuke Nakanishi performed live by Duo Chinoiserie\nIn partnership with the \nBallet Tucson’s Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Chieko Imada creates another stellar world premiere work in partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival\, sharing the legend of Japanese Queen Himiko. Featuring new music performed by the internationally acclaimed Duo Chinoiserie\, Bin Hu and Jing Xia combine the Chinese guzheng and the European classical guitar to celebrate the elegance of the Chinoiserie style and bring the best of Eastern and Western culture together through music. \nROMEO AND JULIET PAS DE DEUX\nMusic by Sergei Prokofiev \nMy bounty is as boundless as the sea\, my love as deep; the more I give to thee\, the more I have\, for both are infinite. – Juliet \nExperience the most celebrated moment of the world’s greatest love story just in time for Valentine’s Day: the iconic balcony scene from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet brought to life through an exquisite classical ballet pas de deux. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Details\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 17. 2023 at 7:00 pm\nSaturday\, February 18\, 2023 at 2:00 pm\nSunday\, February 19\, 2023 at 2:00 pm\nLeo Rich Theater
