Under the artistic direction of EMCC dance professor, Janaea Lyn McAlee, this virtual performance event features videos of solo student choreography and two collaborative group dances. These videos were filmed and edited by PAC director Tim Butterfield, and each show will include a live curtain speech as well as a live post-show talk back with the dancers.
The challenges of this pandemic year resulted in primarily in solos which reflected the dancers experiences. Each story is unique yet we all found a common thread in our enforced isolation – the need to be intensely present in each moment as it unfolded in order to be safe, to be of service, and to be a part of social change. Featured work by dance majors in Choreography 2 class includes Gilded Cage by Camryn Cruz which won two Artist of Promise Awards: 2nd Place Performance and 3rd Place Choreography. This dance explores learning to move past isolation to finding true pleasure in being alone. Other dances include Connections by Carissa Salgado-Garcia, which is about longing for connections with friends. Conceived as a duet, the dancers appear to reach across the gap to each other, yet this dance was filmed as separate solos and edited together to create this effect. Intimacy by Jade Teller looks at the loss of touch and how much it missed when gone. ASU dance minor Sarika Sawant joined DancEstrella to create Chronos vs Kairos, a meditation on the many meanings and experiences of time, both linear and being in the moment.
Tryin’ Times was created at the invitation of the Just Folks Association at Pebble Creek for their 2021 Martin Luther King Day Celebration. This trio was created remotely in the Fall by Professor McAlee with three new dance majors – Kyla Bycroft, Denise Lopez and Audrey Richards. Set to the song of the same name performed by Roberta Flack in 1969, it reflects the fact that the more things change, the more they seem to stay the same…
