Desert Dance Theatre presents “Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman” in partnership with the Phoenix Unified High School District, Cesar Chavez High School and Trevor G. Browne High School, offering one evening public performance on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 6:30pm, and two school field-trip opportunities on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 9:30am and 11:15am at Trevor G. Browne Auditorium, 7402 W Catalina Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85033.

The cast will be made up of Desert Dance Theatre’s professional cast of dancers, singers, string musicians, percussionist and narrator, plus student dance and music performers from Cesar Chavez High School and Trevor G. Browne High School as well as community talent of all ages. The student and community performers will have participated in residency sessions facilitated by Desert Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lisa R. Chow in a series of rehearsals to incorporate them into the production in various roles throughout the show. The evening show on Thursday, March 22nd begins at 6:30pm, opening the first half with Desert Dance Theatre repertory, including a tribute to Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” and “Spreadin’ Rhythm Around,” and “We’re On The Move” (excerpt from Desert Dance Theatre’s “FREE AT LAST”), a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There will also be a selection of performances by the high school dance and music performers, focusing on the theme of “UNITY” and celebrating diversity.

After intermission, Desert Dance Theatre presents its featured performance of “Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman” for the show’s 26th season. This production is a beautiful story of a courageous woman’s determination to free her people from slavery through the Underground Railroad.  She was one of America’s first liberated woman of color, who fought against all odds for the sake of freedom and equality. Our goal in producing this program is to bring light to the incredible accomplishments of the anti-slavery activist, Harriet Tubman.

On Friday, March 23rd at 9:30 am and 11:15 am, the school field-trip performances of Sister Moses are open to all schools throughout the Phoenix area schools and other surrounding areas. Admission to the school matinees is $5, and must be arranged by prepaid reservations only. Downloadable reservation forms Students attending will experience the Story of Harriet Tubman, and watching American History come to life through music, dance, and dramatic narration.

This powerful music / dance / drama features Desert Dance Theatre with Renee Davis as Harriet Tubman, dramatic narration / voice of Harriet by Renee Morgan Brooks, African drumming and music direction by Step Raptis, accompaniment by the Sister Moses String Quartet and traditional spirituals sung by the Sister Moses Choral Ensemble, featuring baritone soloist, Greg Dansby. The unique blend of this 45-minute multidisciplinary presentation highlights the most important episodes of Harriet Tubman’s life, and shares the knowledge and experience of her struggles and accomplishments that will bring a source of inspiration to our audience.

The program follows Tubman’s life as a young slave on a Southern Plantation, her attempts to escape slavery, her work on the Underground Railroad, and her contributions to the Abolitionist movement. Slave songs from that period are featured for their significance as a means of passing information among the slaves. Hidden in the lyrics were vital escape details.

Sister Moses brings history to life through music, dance and drama. Sister Moses is entertaining, educational and truly inspirational!

The Sister Moses Residency and Performances are made possible by sponsorship from the Phoenix Union High School District, supported in part by the Arizona Commission on the Arts which receives support from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts, and from donors and various sponsors.
