AnaTomia – RUSALKI (Aerial Dance)
Choreographers & Dancers: Natasha Kolowsowsky, Maria Thomas, Katherine Tesch, Aurelia Cohen, Lia Griesser.
Our work explores psychological transformation of space through movement and draws on the physical vocabulary of ritual, contact improvisation, ballet, butoh, modern dance, and aerial arts. This piece is rooted in the mythological traditions surrounding siren and mermaid (rusalki) stories. The Russian traditions says that the Rusalki are the spirits of brides that drowned before their weddings and are trapped, dancing for eternity their lost wedding dance. They lure men into their groups with their white glow and then drown them. This piece focuses on spiritual and physical transformations both in and outside of this context.
