ANNUAL MEMBER MEETING

January 22, Sunday, 1-4 pm. ARIZONA DANCE COALITION 2017 ANNUAL MEETING & RECEPTION was held at Mesa Arts Center, Mesa. Presenters included ADC Treasurer Krystyna Parafinczuk, who reviewed the ADC website and its “event posting” features. Lynn Trimble, award-winning freelance writer and photographer specializing in visual and performing arts, spoke on developing media relations. Gabriela Muñoz, Arts Programs Manager at the Arizona Commission on the Arts, talked about the services, programs and funding opportunities provided by the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

LINDY HOP WORKSHOP

October 23, Sunday, 1-2:30 pm. ADC sponsored a FREE LINDY HOP WORKSHOP for High School students with an interest in swing dancing / social dancing. Dabney & Karen Vizzard Hopkins, Guest Instructors & National Jitterbug Champions from Mesa, taught a beginner’s workshop, followed by an hour choreography session, teaching a dance to Duke Ellington’s Rockabye River. The workshop was held at Danswest Dance, 5633 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson, who donated the space. ARIZONA DANCE FESTIVAL 2016

October 2-8, ADC sponsored classes in collaboration with Desert Dance Theatre and the Arizona Dance Festival 2016. Classes, held at various studios in the Phoenix metro area, were taught by Lisa R Chow, Billbob Brown,  MJ Leatherbarrow, Iler Shtylla,  Frances Ethel Smith Cohen, Joan Rodriguez, and Diane McNeal Hunt. Classes were either free or $5. Hosts included Desert Dance Theatre (Dance Theater West/Phoenix), Dance Fusion (Scottsdale), Convergence Ballet Company (Ballet Theatre of Phoenix), and Center Dance Ensemble (Dance Theater West/Phoenix).

The performances were held October 7-8, at Tempe Center for the Arts, were more than 22 companies performed. Each night was a different performance.

This project was supported in part by the Arizona Commission on the Arts which receives support from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts.

ADC ANNUAL MEETING & RECEPTION – On January 2, 2016, join us at Dance Theater West, 3925 East Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018. This event is FREE and OPEN to the public. Mingle and meet ADC Members and other dance colleagues from around the state. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Please bring business cards and promotional materials to share. There will be a brief overview of this past year’s events and accomplishments, as well as discussion about future projects.

Guest Speaker: The Arts Commission’s Ben Watters will present a data-driven analysis of Arizona’s non-profit arts organizations and report on how the agency’s current research activities are changing the way we understand Arizona’s arts sector. Watters will also discuss current initiatives at the Arts Commission, and opportunities for artists and arts organizations to get involved.

ADC co-presents ARIZONA DANCE FESTIVAL 2015

ADC co-presents the ARIZONA DANCE FESTIVAL 2015 with Desert Dance Theatre. Discounted and free dance classes will be the week of October 5-10. There will be two different performances, with 25 dance companies performing all styles, at the Tempe Center for the Arts, Tempe, Friday & Saturday, October 9-10, 7:30 pm. Details can be found at:

Scorpius Dance Theatre will be holding an Intensive “Aerial Silks” Class on Wednesday, 12-3 pm, at their own facility and a bus transport is included in the fee.

Susannah Keita (Grand Canyon U) and Janaea McAlee (Estrella Mtn CC) will lead an Intensive on Wednesday, 2-4 pm, entitled Duncan and Dunham: Embodied Philosophies and Practices, in room Highland 3.

Janaea McAlee will be part of a panel discussing Finding Equal Footing: Community College Dance Programs on Friday, 10 am, Sunset B.

Rebecca Rabideau will be presenting a paper on Developing a Creative community: A Service Learning Project in Creative Aging through Choreographic Process on Friday, 11:30 am, Courtroom M.

ADC participates in Swing, Bop & ALL THAT JAZZ School Shows in Tucson

ADC sponsored Lindy Hop and ballroom dancers to perform with professional jazz musicians in the presentation of Swing, Bop & ALL THAT JAZZ, a school show for the Amphitheater School District, hosted by the Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley, Tucson, on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. More than 600 elementary, middle and high school students attended. That Friday, the Ironwood Ridge HS Choir classes were treated to a Lindy Hop lesson. This event was sponsored in part by a grant from the Tucson Pima Arts Council County Grant and the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation.

On Monday, April 20, 2015, the same show was presented at Utterback Magnet Middle School in Tucson. Approximately 400 students attended from Cavett Elementary School and Utterback Middle School. It was sponsored in part by a grant from Altrusa International of Tucson and the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation.

ADC sponsors Lindy Hop Dancers for Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance (Tucson)

ADC sponsored the Lindy Hop performance by Lajkonik Polish Folk Dance Ensemble at the Tucson Jazz Institute’s Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance, held February 13, 2015, at the Viscount Suites Hotel, Tucson. Dancers had the opportunity to perform with the  #1 high school big band in the country – the TJI Ellington Big Band. This band has claimed the #1 spot at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition (NYC) for many years. ADC was excited to give these dancers to perform, not only to live music, but to one of the best big bands in the nation.

ADC Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Richard Holden (Tucson) on Saturday, February 1, during the Arizona Balalaika Orchestra concert at the Pima Community College CFA, Tucson, honoring his significant contribution to dance in ARIZONA since 1967 when he worked with and later directed the Tucson Civic Ballet, and then when he moved here in 1987, founded the Kalinda Russian Dancers, and performed and choreographed for many studios and companies in  Arizona. The award artist, Al Tucci, donated a print — “Monsoon Rain” — grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the ceremony. Collaborative Methods in Dance Making
This class, aimed at both choreographers and dancers, offers several approaches for generating movement in collaborative environments. Using improvisation, composition, and performance skills, we will simulate a “mini-process” in order to explore ways of generating phrases, manipulating material, and creating dances.

DANCE FESTIVAL OF SO AZ

The ARIZONA DANCE COALITION (ADC) in partnership with the ARIZONA DANCE EDUCATION ORGANIZATION (AzDEO) are presenting the first DANCE FESTIVAL OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA (DFOSA) October 19-20, 2013.

The dance festival will consist of:

  • 30 dance classes (Tucson High School) for high-school age and older dance students and dance teachers in So AZ.  Special  guest master teachers  include Anita Feldman (Hofstra U, Hempstead, NY) Chad Michael Hall (U of California, Irvine, CA), and Kathleen Sinclair of Ballet Yuma and ten others. Read the 28-page Book of Details posted on the event page www.azdancecoalition.org/dance-fest-soaz/

ADC LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEE

Lisa Chow, President of the Arizona Dance Coalition, presented Frances Smith Cohen with the Arizona Dance Coalition Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday, October 24, at Herberger Theater Center. This was opening night for Center Dance Ensemble’s 25th Season presenting The 7 Deadly Sins, featuring The Tragedy of Othello. Lisa was one of the first dancers in Fran’s company in 1989 and often performed as a featured soloist. The award was a welded steel miniature sculpture donated by artist Agnese Udinotti. Read full article on ADC e-Star for November 2013 on page 10-11.

ADC LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEES

ADC presented two Lifetime Achievement Awards (LAA) to Arizona dance professionals that have demonstrated exemplary artistry in performance, choreography, direction and staging and/or leadership, research, scholarship, philanthropy or service to dance in Arizona. On April 14, 2012, Jeanne Wright was given the ADC LAA 2012 at CONDER/dance inextricably linked at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Also, the second ADC LAA 2012 was presented to Ann Ludwig at A Ludwig Dance Theatre’s 35th anniversary concert, “Celebrating 35 Years of Dance: Looking Back; Moving Forward” at the Tempe Center for the Arts on April 21, 2012. Some basic sewing and dyeing information will be shared as well as quick tips on easy changes. Participants are encouraged to bring 1 costume for review and group discussion. NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY CELEBRATION

ADC co-sponsors this annual tap dance festival through grants awarded by the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Master tap dance classes and lecture demonstrations for ages 10 and up and levels beginner through advanced will be held at the Pima Community College Center for the Arts, West Campus, Tucson.  Sounds of the Soles of the Southwest performance will be held on Saturday, May 21 @ 7 pm.  Tap dancers from across Arizona are invited to perform.  Contact gro.noitilaoCecnaDzAnull@anytsyrK for submission details.  To keep a tradition alive, all are invited to come up on stage and perform the Shim Sham Shimmy at the end of the show.   The weekend celebration will culminate with a free to the public performance by master class participants, a TAP JAM and possible tap challenge.  A lecture on the history of TAP will be included.  More details will be available closer to the event.  Discounts for ADC members available.  Discount deadline for master class registration:  April 1.

ADC partners with Tucson Meet Yourself Folklife Festival in Downtown Tucson by offering opportunities for dancers and volunteers for the event. The event focuses on worldwide cultural arts and ethnic traditions. Free dance classes will be offered at the Leo Rich Theatre. Free Event!

NATIONAL DANCE EDUCATION ORGANIZATION CONFERENCE 2010

ADC will be an Exhibitor at the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Conference 2010. The NDEO, in cooperation with Arizona Dance Education Organization and the Herberger Institute School of Dance at Arizona State University, presents a 5 day conference exploring how dance can prepare students for increasingly complex life and work environments in the 21st century.

LEARNING FROM A LEGEND: BILL EVANS TECHNIQUE & COMPOSITION WORKSHOP – ADC offers two scholarships to high school students with financial hardships to attend the Bill Evans Workshop as part of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Conference in Tempe.

TAP IMPROV 101: MINDS & FEET – ADC presents Tap Improv 101: Minds & Feet at Tap Sensation Studio in Tucson. A panel of Tucson tap dance artists and jazz musicians will lead a discussion and demonstration on “how to” prepare for Tap Jams and Challenges. Welcome to guest panelist, Chrissy Jones! Free Event! Donations welcomed.

ARIZONA AFTERSCHOOL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE – ADC will be an exhibitor at the 2010 Arizona Afterschool Conference at the Phoenix Convention Center, providing teaching dance artists opportunities to showcase their afterschool program ideas and connect with community, school and government leaders.

Serving Arizona's dance communities and "creating connections" between the dancers and the general public.
