June 5 @ 8:00 am - June 15 @ 5:00 pm MST

Desert Dance Theatre is a contemporary dance theatre company based in Tempe, Arizona, founded in 1979 by Arizona State University dance graduates. Now celebrating over four decades of artistic excellence, the company has built a reputation as a dynamic and culturally impactful organization with an expansive repertory spanning classical, abstract, theatrical, and socially grounded works.

Under the artistic direction of Lisa R. Chow, Renee Davis, and Step Raptis, Desert Dance Theatre brings together accomplished performers, choreographers, and educators dedicated to advancing the art of dance while fostering meaningful community connections.

The company has performed and toured extensively throughout Arizona and across the United States, with international engagements including Mexico and Cuba—reaching thousands of audiences through mainstage productions, educational programs, and community-based performances.

Desert Dance Theatre’s mission is to develop, promote, and present contemporary dance theatre through performances, educational residencies, children’s programs, and master classes that contribute to the artistic and cultural growth of the Southwest. The company is especially recognized for its thematic works that explore culturally relevant and socially impactful narratives, including its acclaimed civil rights trilogy: Free At Last, Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman, and Judgments.

A leader in arts education, Desert Dance Theatre has delivered thousands of performances and outreach programs through its Artist-in-Residence and Arts-in-Education initiatives, creating accessible and engaging experiences for diverse communities. Through its Guest Choreographer Series, the company continues to commission and present new works by nationally and internationally recognized artists, further expanding the depth and diversity of its repertory.
