Chris Elliott & Delia Ibañez, Arizona Commission on the Arts

Presentation: Arts and Culture Sector Update
A brief presentation from Arts Commission staff that will overview what the Arizona Commission on the Arts is, what it does, and updates about the Arizona arts and culture sector. Specifically, the presentation will include discussions about its agency’s programming, grant programs, upcoming events, and the newly released Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 study results. 

Chris Elliott, a Special Initiatives and Communications Coordinator, is serving at the Arizona Commission on the Arts as a Public Ally AZ Member for his second year. Originally from New Jersey, he grew up immersed in a variety of musical activities. In 2019, he received a B.A. in Sociology and Music, from Goucher College. In 2022, he received a M.M. in Music Theatre from Arizona State University. Chris has always had a passion for the arts and performing. Combining that with his interests in sociology and musicology, he decided to apply his skills and interest to the Arts Administration world. He brings to the Arizona Commission on the Arts experience in community engagement and outreach, project management, and communications. Chris’s first year with the Arizona Commission on the Arts had him successfully complete the Arts and Economic Prosperity 6 Study for the state of Arizona. In his spare time, Chris can be found performing in various musicals throughout the Phoenix area. 

Delia Ibañez is a multidisciplinary artist and administrator working to decenter the self and create worlds inspired by the ancestors – both human and fungal. Delia’s personal body of work, Process in Place, has four branches – workbooks, residencies, collections, and workshops – which all intertwine to form networks of inquisitive creative action directly impacted by geographical context. The geographical communities that shape this work are the Northern Neck of Virginia and Metro Phoenix Arizona. Delia is proud to serve to individual artists of the state of Arizona as Artist Programs Coordinator for Arizona Commission on the Arts, managing the Artist Opportunity Grant and facilitating the Artist Investment Program.

Delia Ibañez graduated from Arizona State University in 2020 with a BA in Performance and Movement. Since then they have worked steadily in the Dance sector as a teacher, choreographer, performer, and administrator. Delia is currently collaborating with Greybox Collective utilizing their Trauma Informed Creative Practices model. As a member of several national networks, including Latin Hispanic Dancers United and the Queer Farmer Network, they offer expertise as a community engagement specialist and freelance program coordinator particularly within latinx and rural communities. Delia Ibañez has been awarded grant funding through NALAC, City of Phoenix, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and Arizona Commission on the Arts.

Suzy Guarino-Hall, Tap 24.7

Presentation: “My Love Affair with Tap”
Embark on a journey into the rhythmic realm of tap dancing with me as I delve into my enduring passion for this timeless art. In my presentation, I will weave a narrative that traces the footsteps of historical tap dance masters who inspired me in my youth, while also illuminating the evolving depth of my appreciation for the craft. Join me in exploring the legacy I impart to my students and the innovative concepts and creations that will propel the art of tap into a vibrant future.

Suzy Guarino-Hall, holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Loyola University Chicago, and is the visionary behind the Phoenix-based tap company, Tap 24.7. In this role, she has crafted, produced, and directed 13 original shows, captivating audiences not only in Phoenix but also in cities like Detroit, Seattle, and San Diego. From the enchanting “Tappy the Elf” to the gripping “Murder at The TAP’Ocho,” Suzy’s productions showcase her versatility and creativity.

As a tap dance choreographer and teacher, Suzy imparts her expertise through workshops at esteemed events such as Motor City Tap Fest and Phoenix Tap Fest. Her influence extends to dance competitions, where she serves as show director for AMP Dance Competitions adjudicator for In10sity Dance, demonstrating her keen eye for talent and artistic expression.

In the Phoenix area, Suzy is a respected figure at The Dance Project, Take Five Dance Academy, and LA Dance, where she choreographs for competition groups, garnering multiple national awards for her outstanding work. Her students, under her guidance, consistently earn national titles, a testament to her exceptional teaching and choreographic skills.

Currently in her ninth year as adjunct faculty for the dance department at Grand Canyon University, Suzy teaches tap at all levels, leaving an indelible mark on the next generation of performers. Beyond being a dancer and choreographer, Suzy Guarino-Hall is a storyteller, shaping the narrative of tap dance and leaving an enduring legacy in the hearts of those she inspires.

 Daniela Borgialli, International Argentine Tango Academy

Presentation: Argentine Tango: Moving Beyond Patterns
This dance that was birthed during a huge planned immigration in the late 1800’s is alive and well today as a global phenomenon. What makes this dance form so compelling, not just as a spectator but as a dancer?

Daniela Borgialli has been teaching performing dancing Argentine Tango for more than 25 years. Once the tango bug bit she went wherever she could for more! She received her MFA in Dance from ASU and taught Tango 1 and Tango 2 at ASU for 10 years. She built the syllabus and curriculum and in 2015 published The Tango Workbook (currently under revision) to accompany students in their Argentine Tango journey. Although a self-proclaimed social dancer, she trained and competed in over 5 Argentine Tango competitions in the US and in Argentina. In 2012 she and her partner received 2nd place in the US Tango Salon Championship in San Francisco. In 2015 she moved to Europe where she was based in Berlin and taught and performed throughout Europe. In 2016 she received certification from her maestra, Graciela Gonzalez to teach her methodology. In 2023 she returned to Arizona to found the International Argentine Tango Academy and is happily teaching Tango 1 at ASU again as well as several courses as adjunct faculty at Mesa Community College.

The Arizona Dance Coalition is hosting a workshop offered by Debbie Polisky (New ADC Board Member) called “Eat Like A Rainbow” – Nutrition for Dancers. This 45 minute webinar is being offered to ADC Members for FREE and $10 for Non-Members. This is the first of many workshops that we hope will develop into a series of virtual kitchen/nutrition/wellness workshops and/or a variety of interesting virtual dance related workshops. Although, this workshop is geared towards dancers, EVERYONE is welcome to participate.

“Eat like a Rainbow” – Nutrition for Dancers: Whether you’re an amateur or professional, nutrition is an essential part of your weekly workouts and dance routine. This workshop will provide you with healthy recipes and nutritional advice with lots of color, flavor and love, so you can be and feel your very best in your daily dance.

Guest presenter is James Sewell, Artistic Director of James Sewell Ballet (Minneapolis). Jimmy will lead us through his trademarked COORDI-BALLET class. The Annual Board & Member meeting to be held on Sunday, January 14th. From 12:00pm-1:30pm will be the ADC board meeting, 1:30-3:30 pm will be the annual general member meeting. You are welcome to bring guests who may be interested in working with us on our action plans for this coming year and the future. We need to make sure we have enough chairs. And we will be heading out to eat afterwards.

Members are welcome to make short 5-7 minute presentations. Non-members $50 for a promo spot – if you know of someone looking to promote their business. They would be considered sponsors and can distribute promo materials, and provide an email sign-up sheet.

ANNUAL MEMBER MEETING

January 22, Sunday, 1-4 pm. ARIZONA DANCE COALITION 2017 ANNUAL MEETING & RECEPTION was held at Mesa Arts Center, Mesa. Presenters included ADC Treasurer Krystyna Parafinczuk, who reviewed the ADC website and its “event posting” features. Lynn Trimble, award-winning freelance writer and photographer specializing in visual and performing arts, spoke on developing media relations. Gabriela Muñoz, Arts Programs Manager at the Arizona Commission on the Arts, talked about the services, programs and funding opportunities provided by the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

2016

LINDY HOP WORKSHOP

October 23, Sunday, 1-2:30 pm. ADC sponsored a FREE LINDY HOP WORKSHOP for High School students with an interest in swing dancing / social dancing. Dabney & Karen Vizzard Hopkins, Guest Instructors & National Jitterbug Champions from Mesa, taught a beginner’s workshop, followed by an hour choreography session, teaching a dance to Duke Ellington’s Rockabye River. The workshop was held at Danswest Dance, 5633 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson, who donated the space. ARIZONA DANCE FESTIVAL 2016

October 2-8, ADC sponsored classes in collaboration with Desert Dance Theatre and the Arizona Dance Festival 2016. Classes, held at various studios in the Phoenix metro area, were taught by Lisa R Chow, Billbob Brown,  MJ Leatherbarrow, Iler Shtylla,  Frances Ethel Smith Cohen, Joan Rodriguez, and Diane McNeal Hunt. Classes were either free or $5. Hosts included Desert Dance Theatre (Dance Theater West/Phoenix), Dance Fusion (Scottsdale), Convergence Ballet Company (Ballet Theatre of Phoenix), and Center Dance Ensemble (Dance Theater West/Phoenix).

The performances were held October 7-8, at Tempe Center for the Arts, were more than 22 companies performed. Each night was a different performance.

This project was supported in part by the Arizona Commission on the Arts which receives support from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts.

January 2, 2016

ADC ANNUAL MEETING & RECEPTION – On January 2, 2016, join us at Dance Theater West, 3925 East Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018. This event is FREE and OPEN to the public. Mingle and meet ADC Members and other dance colleagues from around the state. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Please bring business cards and promotional materials to share. There will be a brief overview of this past year’s events and accomplishments, as well as discussion about future projects.

Guest Speaker: The Arts Commission’s Ben Watters will present a data-driven analysis of Arizona’s non-profit arts organizations and report on how the agency’s current research activities are changing the way we understand Arizona’s arts sector. Watters will also discuss current initiatives at the Arts Commission, and opportunities for artists and arts organizations to get involved.

Rebecca Rabideau will be presenting a paper on Developing a Creative community: A Service Learning Project in Creative Aging through Choreographic Process on Friday, 11:30 am, Courtroom M.

ADC participates in Swing, Bop & ALL THAT JAZZ School Shows in Tucson

ADC sponsored Lindy Hop and ballroom dancers to perform with professional jazz musicians in the presentation of Swing, Bop & ALL THAT JAZZ, a school show for the Amphitheater School District, hosted by the Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley, Tucson, on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. More than 600 elementary, middle and high school students attended. That Friday, the Ironwood Ridge HS Choir classes were treated to a Lindy Hop lesson. This event was sponsored in part by a grant from the Tucson Pima Arts Council County Grant and the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation.

On Monday, April 20, 2015, the same show was presented at Utterback Magnet Middle School in Tucson. Approximately 400 students attended from Cavett Elementary School and Utterback Middle School. It was sponsored in part by a grant from Altrusa International of Tucson and the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation.

ADC sponsors Lindy Hop Dancers for Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance (Tucson)

ADC sponsored the Lindy Hop performance by Lajkonik Polish Folk Dance Ensemble at the Tucson Jazz Institute’s Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance, held February 13, 2015, at the Viscount Suites Hotel, Tucson. Dancers had the opportunity to perform with the  #1 high school big band in the country – the TJI Ellington Big Band. This band has claimed the #1 spot at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition (NYC) for many years. ADC was excited to give these dancers to perform, not only to live music, but to one of the best big bands in the nation.

ADC Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Richard Holden (Tucson) on Saturday, February 1, during the Arizona Balalaika Orchestra concert at the Pima Community College CFA, Tucson, honoring his significant contribution to dance in ARIZONA since 1967 when he worked with and later directed the Tucson Civic Ballet, and then when he moved here in 1987, founded the Kalinda Russian Dancers, and performed and choreographed for many studios and companies in  Arizona. The award artist, Al Tucci, donated a print — “Monsoon Rain” — grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the ceremony. ARTS CONGRESS 2013ADC will participate as an Event Sponsor at Arts Congress on Monday, February 4th at the Arizona State Capitol, House Lawn, 1700 W. Washington, Phoenix. As an event sponsor, ADC will send four representatives from the dance community to speak to legislators from their legislative districts. Arizona Citizens for the Arts will host a day of celebration and advocacy for arts, culture and arts education in Arizona. Please join us for Arts Congress 2013.

Collaborative Methods in Dance Making
This class, aimed at both choreographers and dancers, offers several approaches for generating movement in collaborative environments. Using improvisation, composition, and performance skills, we will simulate a “mini-process” in order to explore ways of generating phrases, manipulating material, and creating dances.

The world renowned Susan Marshall & Company’s repertory is an innovative body of work that blends virtuosic athleticism, ordinary movement, and gesture. The Company has a long history of multidisciplinary collaboration, with over 40 works made in collaboration with musicians, visual artists, and designers.

ADC LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEE

Lisa Chow, President of the Arizona Dance Coalition, presented Frances Smith Cohen with the Arizona Dance Coalition Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday, October 24, at Herberger Theater Center. This was opening night for Center Dance Ensemble’s 25th Season presenting The 7 Deadly Sins, featuring The Tragedy of Othello. Lisa was one of the first dancers in Fran’s company in 1989 and often performed as a featured soloist. Catherine “Rusty” Foley, Executive Director of Arizona Citizens for the Arts, will provide insights to arts advocacy, arts promotion and how to engage politicians in the arts. CONTRA-TIEMPO is a Los Angeles based dance company, founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez. The company fuses Salsa, Afro-Cuban, Hip-Hop, and abstract dance theater. ADC LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEES

ADC presented two Lifetime Achievement Awards (LAA) to Arizona dance professionals that have demonstrated exemplary artistry in performance, choreography, direction and staging and/or leadership, research, scholarship, philanthropy or service to dance in Arizona. On April 14, 2012, Jeanne Wright was given the ADC LAA 2012 at CONDER/dance inextricably linked at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Also, the second ADC LAA 2012 was presented to Ann Ludwig at A Ludwig Dance Theatre’s 35th anniversary concert, “Celebrating 35 Years of Dance: Looking Back; Moving Forward” at the Tempe Center for the Arts on April 21, 2012. Some basic sewing and dyeing information will be shared as well as quick tips on easy changes. Participants are encouraged to bring 1 costume for review and group discussion. The workshop will be lead by Marlina Kessler of 12th Street Costumes and Dancewear. Free Event! Donations welcomed.

NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY CELEBRATION

ADC co-sponsors this annual tap dance festival through grants awarded by the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Master tap dance classes and lecture demonstrations for ages 10 and up and levels beginner through advanced will be held at the Pima Community College Center for the Arts, West Campus, Tucson.  Sounds of the Soles of the Southwest performance will be held on Saturday, May 21 @ 7 pm.  Tap dancers from across Arizona are invited to perform.  Contact gro.noitilaoCecnaDzAnull@anytsyrK for submission details.  To keep a tradition alive, all are invited to come up on stage and perform the Shim Sham Shimmy at the end of the show.   The weekend celebration will culminate with a free to the public performance by master class participants, a TAP JAM and possible tap challenge.  A lecture on the history of TAP will be included.  More details will be available closer to the event.  Discounts for ADC members available.  Discount deadline for master class registration:  April 1.
